Education Buildings Journal

‘The Welsh Government is delighted to support the Education Buildings Wales Conference. We believe in high quality learning environments and have invested £1.4 billion into more than 150 schools and colleges in Wales through our 21st Century Schools programme, with 90 projects completed and another 50 under construction. This conference will increase awareness of how buildings can become more sustainable, inclusive and conducive to a positive learning experience. I look forward to learning with you at the event on the 18th and 19th June.’

Kirsty Williams AM, Cabinet Secretary for Education at the Welsh Government

An increasing number of reports and studies are being published around the health and wellbeing of our school children as well as further and higher education students. Carys Fisher from IBI Group and Lucy Plumridge, HLM Architects will be discussing the importance of this topic and how it can be addressed in the education built environment.

Moving on to day 2, Simon Wareing from Gleeds will be chairing a session which looks at the benefi ts of offsite construction in the ‘Construction and Delivery Models’ session. The session will see presentations from Andy King at Wernick Buildings. With a focus on modular buildings, he is showcasing how the modern day modular building is nothing like the historic perceptions of box-like demountable classrooms. Andrew Cook from Innovaré will also talk us through their offsite manufactured pre-insulated structural panel system. He will tell us about their work on Ysgol Pen Barras and Rhos Street School which is due for completion soon.

A keynote address from Kirsty Williams AM, Cabinet Secretary for Education at the Welsh Government will be a highlight of the second day.

Simon Hatherley from Scott Brownrigg will be taking us through the ‘Sustainable Buildings’ session, providing us with an overview of the Passivhaus standard and providing some background on how the system was developed. Mark Morant from
