preventative measures. Residents can benefit from daily screenings conducted by trained thermographers, a service not yet accessible to the general public. It is generally acknowledged that pressure injuries (PIs) and diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) can largely be prevented with early detection and intervention, which can achieve up to 80 per cent reductions. Thermography offers an opportunity for the care sector, NHS, organisations such as Diabetes UK, The NAPCHD, Care England, and The National Care Foundation, as well as local authorities and MedTech manufacturers, to collaborate, reduce costs, decrease hospitalisations, save staff time, enhance care home efficiencies, and improve residents’ quality of life. Such a multi-agency approach has the potential to save the public purse approximately £350 m per year, reduce pressure on care home staff, and improve the quality of life for residents.

Applications beyond PIs and DFUs Thermography is extremely versatile, supporting the screening and management of multiple other conditions including: n Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVTs).

Deep Vein Thrombosis In a 2017 study, Kaçmaz20

advocated

thermography as the preferred method for initial DVT investigation (over ultrasound and venography) for its instant, and highly

intuitive output, confirming DVT presence before referral to other more complex and expensive tests.

Pain

Pain is another indicator used for measuring quality of care homes. Some studies21

suggest

pain prevalence in residents varies from 8.6 per cent to 79.6 per cent, while on average some 33 per cent of residents suffer daily pain.
