Sustainability

ahead with their own sustainability journey and contribute to the fight against climate change. Arguably, the application of BREEAM

and its well-established framework is the biggest piece of advice I would give others. This assessment method has helped bolster our understanding and created a step- by-step approach to making a building as environmentally friendly as possible. In particular, the ‘BREEAM In Use’ method is a valuable first step for care home operators. It allows for a review of existing care homes to identify and introduce changes, without the monetary commitment that comes from a new care home development scheme.

From this point these targets can then be

applied with new care home builds as part of the ‘BREEAM In Construction’ process, which is far more rigorous, but allows for a greater application of environmentally friendly elements into the scheme.
