FOREWORD
Hyper-connected for healthcare solutions
Unlike my predecessors, and hopefully my successors, my tenure as IFHE president started amid a global pandemic that we’ve had to endure since the start of 2020. It meant that everything had changed and had to change both on a personal and professional level in healthcare. The healthcare systems and hospitals in Italy and worldwide were submerged in a crisis and what ensued was a rapid, desperate, yet heroic struggle to assess, evaluate, and act in a way to save the systems that save lives. Hospitals areas were repurposed, spaces were transformed, operating theatres modified, meetings went online, and a need for agility arose. In the same period, the perception of IT tools changed and remote working and communication became a norm – along with a certain confidence for managing this mix. From an IFHE perspective, we had
already cancelled the Rome Congress, where we would have had celebrated the federation’s 50th birthday in its birthplace, and work began to create an online version which would take place in January 2021, reaching a record 1200 people in 61 countries around the world. I am immensely proud of all the team in Italy who contributed to this and to the EXCO for their support for the event. Despite the pandemic, our people also
found the resourcefulness, through our relationship with the WHO, to see rapid teams deployed to different parts of the globe to assist in medical emergencies. We are very grateful to the volunteers for making this happen. We’ve also completed the Sustainable
Environmental Policy which is a key document for the federation and a worthy reference point for sustainability. I’ve often said that sharing knowledge
and technical expertise is a key objective of IFHE, set out from the beginning and as important today as it was 50 years ago. The importance of communication both internally (we have had a particularly busy two years thanks to the increasingly prevalent online platforms) and externally (our communication strategy) – of reaching out to members more regularly and meaningfully through the recent launch of our newsletter and the intent of holding future webinars - cannot be overstated.

Daniela Pedrini
Daniela Pedrini is the former president of the IFHE and IFHE-EU, and president of the Italian Society for Healthcare Engineering and Architecture (SIAIS). She is director of the technical, planning, development, and investments department of the Hospital- University Authority of Bologna - Sant’Orsola Polyclinic. Daniela has a long career in the health sector, with important roles in the management of technical aspects of hospitals, and teaches for many healthcare engineering courses and university Master’s programmes. She has been honoured with a medal of the Italian Republic Order of Merit.
We strive to improve our member
experience by engaging with our members in better ways, through new technology and seeking out current and next generation concerns, be it climate change or sustainability. Like many of you, I’ve missed the chat that accompanies the face-to-face meetings and so I tried to reach out with one-to-ones, with small group video calls, by participating in national congresses (ABDEH-Brazil, AADAIH- Argentina, IHEEM-UK, HEAJ-Japan, SMAES-Mexico, SAFHE-South Africa et al., thanks to digital platforms) to promote IFHE and to understand the needs and aspirations of IFHE members and stakeholders.
cornerstone of IFHE and we have been in contact with various organizations and potential partner groups including HCWH, GGHH, GCHA, ICEC, etc. These are alliances where we can align and underpin our values, be it climate change, energy efficiency, or hospital design and technology. Within our global context, new members have emerged (Indonesia and Bosnia-Herzegovina are on board) and our regional groups in the Americas and Europe are a hive of activity. We had a digital event in Mexico with an AI theme, managed by the Mexican association, SMAES, which also hosted the online intermediate Council Meeting. In addition, we had a constructive meeting with a new B member, AMIESAC. The scientific research remains
paramount in the organisation, as we share and pool our expertise in design and innovation more sustainably. I was lucky enough to work with
some fantastic colleagues during my term as president and I want to say a special thanks to the EXCO secretaries, the Executive committee itself, and the Marketing and Communications Group for its work to date in developing our strategy and all member associations. After Toronto, our next (28th) IFHE
Congress will be hosted by SAFHE in South Africa in 2024 and we look forward to participating in what should be an amazing congress in a beautiful city. Other future congresses will, in time, be decided and my own wish is that we continue to face the global challenges, whether it is COVID, climate change, the soaring cost of living, or the energy crisis, with the same resolve and urgency that I witnessed during my tenure.
