Overview

A key role as an influencer Peter Sellars CEng, FIHEEM, MBIFM, MAPM – Chief Executive, IHEEM

As the newly appointed IHEEM CEO, having just completed a two-year term as President, I am delighted to introduce this 2nd edition of the IHEEM Handbook. Founded in 1943 – five years

before the NHS – IHEEM has a long history of providing career support to engineers, facilities managers, and allied healthcare estates professionals. We celebrated our 75th Anniversary in 2018, and are well placed to continue our support over next 75 years! Although one of the smaller professional engineering bodies, IHEEM plays a major role in supporting the Department of Health and Social Care, NHSI, and the devolved authorities, to ensure healthcare estates are safe and fit for purpose. At the heart of our mission is the provision

of continuing professional development to our members – delivered nationally at major conferences, and regionally through our Branches. CPD’s increasing importance to all our members and registrants is recognised, and we plan a number of exciting new initiatives this year and into 2020. IHEEM is licensed by the Engineering

Council, and promotes healthcare engineering careers in alliance with Engineering UK and the Royal Academy of Engineering. We also have particularly strong links with our colleagues at The Health Estates and Facilities Management Association (HefmA), and have been pleased to introduce our free affiliate membership to NHS Trusts and Boards UK-wide. IHEEM prides itself as being a diverse

community. As such we benefit greatly from the support of volunteers – who

provide a valuable contribution through their service on various Committees, Platforms, and Working Groups. IHEEM is also highly supportive of our industry and academic partners. The IHEEM Company Affiliate scheme

encompasses over 220 organisations who are active within our sector, and our links with Universities are reflected in the growing Affiliate scheme designed to provide mutual R&D opportunities. Increasingly, IHEEM is involved in the origination and updating of technical guidance, working with NHSI and industry specialists. Our Technical Platforms bring together experts from all the major specialist disciplines, and provide an outstanding knowledge source for our sector. We hope you will find this handbook helpful in identifying how IHEEM can help you and/or your organisation keep up to date with key developments in our sector, and that you will get involved in the Institute’s work.
