Surgeons and Beaumont Hospital in Ireland, will lead discussions on ‘Operating theatre ventilation and reducing post- operative infection. Is it all just hot air?’ He will consider the evidence that controlled air reduces post-operative infection, the value of ultraclean ventilation in orthopaedic surgery, and the practices and human behaviour that affect theatre ventilation. Managing Director of Inspired Pharma Training, Dominic Parry, will discuss the requirements for cleanrooms in pharmaceutical production, the regulatory requirements, grades of cleanroom and when they are used, cleanroom design and operation, and the monitoring of the environment – ‘airflow patterns and viable and non-viable monitoring’. Tracey Gauci, co-ordinator of the Welsh Branch of the Infection Prevention Society, Patron to the Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals, and deputy clinical director at Gama Healthcare, will ask: ‘Replace or remove washhand basins in the clinical area?’, in the light of the increasing number of reports implicating colonised sink traps as the source of colonisation of vulnerable hospitalised patients with drug resistant gram-negative bacteria.


Cyber-attacks on the NHS Last year the NHS suffered a cyber-attack by the WannaCry ransomware, which affected services across the UK. The future threat of cyber-attacks presents a tough challenge for the NHS and the wider healthcare sector to address. Martin Webley, head of Cyber Security at NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS), will discuss NWIS’s role in protecting NHS Wales, and how it is supporting collaborative improvement and embracing new technology and innovation. The impact that cyber-attacks have on business continuity and disaster recovery will be explored, alongside potential mitigation measures, by Huw Shurmer, Programme manager at Fujifilm UK.


Proton beam therapy Last month University College London Hospitals (UCLH) NHS Foundation Trust (FT) reached a key milestone in the construction of its Proton Beam Therapy (PBT) Centre, with the delivery of the cyclotron. Fire safety in healthcare estates June 2017’s Grenfell Tower tragedy has seen a renewed focus on fire safety and the potential implications for the healthcare sector. In the first of a series of fire safety sessions, Gareth Lloyd, a Fire Advisor at NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership – Specialist Estates Services, will discuss the interim report by Dame Hackitt, Building a Safer Future – Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. Colin Newman, director of Healthfire, will then explore ‘what the Grenfell Tower fire has told us so far’, key lessons learned, the NHS response, and the potential implications for HTM guidance. Infection control and compliance Dr Geraldine O’Brien, Research manager at Health Facilities Scotland, will explore two processes to manage compliance and infection control in healthcare environments – the Statutory Compliance Audit Risk Tool (SCART), and the Healthcare Associated Infection System for Controlling Risk in the Built Environment (HAISCRIBE).


Hospital design for coastal areas James Tinsdeall, head of Estates Operations and Trust Health and Safety at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, will look at the key considerations in the design and construction of hospitals located in a marine environment.


BIM on a ‘live’ project in Wales Following on from last year’s presentation, David Leverton, technical leader, and Katie Evans, lead digital engineer, at Laing O’Rourke, will provide an update on progress with the Grange University Hospital project, which is making extensive use of digital engineering – including BIM – to drive the design, coordination, manufacturing, and delivery, of Wales’s largest capital project.
