Multi-stranded energy project Two entrants – Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust – were awarded Highly Commended Certificates. The former was commended for a Hospital Energy Project which, in a scheme undertaken by Vital Energi in tandem with the Trust, saw the ageing boilers at the city’s Churchill and John
Radcliffe Hospitals replaced with new boilers, a 4.5 MWe CHP system installed at the John Radcliffe Hospital, and a 2 km underground Energy Link built under local roads that transfers electricity, hot water, and communications, around both sites in a continuous loop. This ensures that all the energy is used at maximum efficiency. Over 6,400 light fittings at both hospitals have been updated and replaced, while in a variation to the original contract, the John Radcliffe Hospital’s 1970s chiller plants are currently being removed and new chiller equipment worth £2.5 million being installed to provide more efficient cooling and significantly reduce Legionella risk. The project is being financed over 25 years out of guaranteed savings, rather than from the Trust’s capital budget.
