IFHE NEWS Plans well in hand for 2019 IFHE-EU event

IHEEM, the successful host for the 8th IFHE-European Conference to be held in October 2019, has started the planning process in earnest by formulating a special Working Group to take things forward.

Chaired by IHEEM President, Pete Sellars, the Group will work closely and liaise with IHEEM`s Conference and Exhibition Committee to provide an international flavour to the Institute’s annual Healthcare Estates event in Manchester in October 2019.

David Whiteley, the Secretary of IFHE Europe, and a member of IHEEM’s International Technical Platform, said: “Further to the already successful series of events to celebrate IHEEM`s 75th Anniversary in 2018, it seems only fitting that the celebrations of the world’s most established healthcare engineering and healthcare estate management organisation continue into 2019 with

IHEEM chosen to host the IFHE-European Conference and associated IFHE Executive Committee and International Council meetings. It is currently planned that these will take place around IHEEM’s 2019 Healthcare Estates conference at Manchester Central, with meetings starting on Sunday 6 October, and concluding with a day of technical visits to various healthcare-related sites of interest on Thursday 10 October 2019.” The Working Group, which includes Pete Sellars, David Whiteley, and the Institute’s events and marketing manager, Craig Willcock, has already

‘teleconferenced’ once to date to establish the overarching principles, with a view to making this ‘one-off’ event an international success. The members will be assisted by Steve Webb from IHEEM`s partner organisation, Step Exhibitions, and members of IHEEM’s International Technical Platform, who have represented

General Secretary, reports that the Federation’s Executive Committee has met twice since the last (May 2018) ‘IFHE’ issue of HEJ, and at those meetings has discussed membership, ‘the future of IFHE’, the IFHE 25th World Congress in Brisbane this October (HEJ – May 2018), and the IFHE-EU conference in 2019.

Andy Wavell said: “The ‘Exco also received updates from the President, Douwe Kiestra, on his activities, the IFHE’s current financial position was discussed, and concerns around the dissemination of the IFHE Digest debated. It was agreed to contact all member organisations, as it has become very difficult for the Secretariat to keep contact details up to date. Each Exco member was allocated national organisations to contact to obtain the latest contact details, and with Step Communications indicating less electronic ‘hits’ on the publication this year, to determine how each organisation is disseminating the link for the Digest. Members were asked to feed back the results of their contact updating at the next meeting in July. “At the meetings attended by the President and several other Exco

David Whiteley added: “Following feedback from colleagues throughout Europe, the objective will be for IHEEM to host a highly successful, internationally-themed event fully integrated within the Healthcare Estates annual conference proceedings. This in itself will be a challenge, but one which IHEEM is particularly keen to accept against the backdrop of a situation where it is hard to predict what impact ‘Brexit’ will have either on the UK healthcare sector as a whole, or on suppliers to this fast-moving field. Further updates are planned, and will be highlighted in future issues of HEJ.” Those keen to get involved in, or contribute to, the 2019 IFHE-European Conference should contact Craig Willcock; T: 023 9282 3186, or email: craig.willcock@iheem.org.uk

were pleased to see the comprehensive information being circulated, but expressed concern that the spread of speakers was somewhat limited. Darryl Pitcher came back to the second meeting with a positive response, confirming that extra speaking slots would be made available, and speakers selected from the member organisations worldwide.

members in both the USA and Mexico, a paper was produced on the IFHE’s future, with discussion at both Exco meetings. It was decided that as the existing Working Groups no longer do what is required, a paper be produced for the Congress in Brisbane showing how a new format of ‘portfolios’ geared to the future of IFHE be introduced, with an Exco member, plus Council members, taking ownership. “Darryl Pitcher, General Secretary of host organisation for the 25th World Congress, the Institute of Healthcare Engineering Australia, reported at both meetings on progress with arrangements for the Brisbane event. “I gave a brief update on arrangements for the 2019 IFHE Exco and Council meetings to coincide with the IFHE Europe Conference in Manchester during October 2019. More information will be available at the Brisbane Congress. “The President gave an update on his recent activities, including his involvement in creating a link between universities in Arnhem and Mexico for the exchange of both students and lecturers at summer and winter schools. The Treasurer confirmed that financial expenditure is on track for the year. Lastly, members were advised that around a dozen articles had been received for the 2019 IFHE Digest so far, which had been circulated to the Editorial Panel for comment. Currently, 29 articles have been received, and are awaiting comment.”
