as a waterproofing layer in its own right, able to resist up to a 100 m head of negative water pressure, and presenting a high-quality, ultra-smooth appearance. Cementfill HB, a higher-build repair mortar, can be used to create fillets at junctions prior to the application of other RIW products. In many circumstances consultants or contractors opt to utilise a high performance product like RIW Toughseal, which will be applied across the entire floor area, as well as up the sides of the bund and larger wall sections. Importantly, Toughseal achieves excellent adhesion to all commonly used construction materials, including masonry and board products.
Not only does Toughseal offer very dependable resistance to abrasion, but it also exhibits excellent performance in relation to preventing the spread of flame. Additionally, it is also suitable for application to green concrete, so will not delay the subsequent installation of tanks or other plant. While the contractor will have to respect all of the conventional constraints in terms of creating a clean, sound substrate ready for treatment, Toughseal does not require a primer, and is simply roller or spray applied. The rapid-curing, two-coat treatment serves as a permanent dust suppressant, as well as creating a waterproof and chemically-resistant membrane.
Two coat build-up
From the aspect of achieving consistent coverage, as well as an attractive visual appearance to the treated area, specifiers can also choose between black or grey coloured finishes: the different colour confirming for those applying the product, or inspecting the work in progress, that the two coat build-up is being completed correctly.
Addressing details
The need to address any project-specific challenges in a responsive and proactive manner cannot be stressed too strongly, and to this end Toughseal is offered with a full selection of standard details: addressing floor-to-wall junctions, external as well as internal corners, and other situations. It is inevitably interfaces which are the most vulnerable to leakage, and the details include such areas already mentioned as drainage outlets or pipe penetrations where differential movement can occur.
Significantly, the majority of standard details across RIW’s entire product range are now available as 3D BIM objects, suitable for assimilation into consultants’ project drawings, and compatible with the major BIM platforms including Revit and IFC. RIW also offers the capability to produce bespoke junction details where necessary, but would always recommend that such design demands are addressed

as early in the construction programme as possible. This strategy will help to avoid conflicts and delays, or the creation of areas so difficult to access that they cannot be treated successfully.
Vulnerable substrates
It is sometimes necessary to take up irregularities between adjacent substrates using polyurethane or epoxy adhesives and sealants. Beads of 5-6 mm thickness can be applied between the structural floor and the underside of the steel angle framing the bund. Partition walls within premises, however substantial they might appear, can be discovered to comprise or contain some lightweight and very vulnerable materials. For every concrete or blockwork wall seen in non-domestic buildings, including medical facilities, there are those which are formed using proprietary light gauge steel framing or basic timber studwork. There have even been partition systems featuring a sandwich construction with a cardboard honeycomb in the centre. While many partitions in hospitals might be faced with high performance board products such as cement particle or magnesium oxide (MgO) panels, a large percentage present nothing more substantial than a standard plasterboard dry-lining; with taped joints rather than a full skim coat. Thankfully these are treatable using Toughseal, while the very versatile, liquid-applied RIW Flexiseal Pro can be utilised to treat a 100 mm wide band of both the partition wall and floor. This can be applied in either two coats or one thick coat to create a flexible interface over which the Toughseal laps.
High BREEAM standards Modern hospitals and other healthcare buildings are now routinely constructed to achieve BREEAM ‘Very Good’ or even ‘Excellent’ standards, while the design of their ward, consulting, and other spaces
is informed by research on the positive impact that the surroundings have on the recovery time of patients, and especially the very young and vulnerable. Additionally, although they represent some of the biggest financial investments made through Government spending or private investment, the materials and products used within such buildings should be specified to offer the longest maintenance-free working life possible. Having well-designed and built bunds within the plant and service areas to healthcare buildings will play an important part in ensuring that our hospitals are operated safely, sustainably, and cost effectively.
