refurbishment was that the system could be laid without the use of hot works and this, as mentioned, minimised the health and safety risks at the busy, occupied hospital during the refurbishment work. It is important to stress that managing fire risk during any construction project is a regulatory issue, and one that contractors take very seriously, with trained roofing installers following strict procedures. Yet even in the most capable and vigilant hands, hot works inherently involve fire risk, and the only way to guarantee that there is no possibility of an accident that will cause a fire is to remove the risk by specifying an alternative to a hot works- based system, such as a cold-applied liquid membrane like Kemperol. Indeed, the use of hot works, and particularly those that use a blow torch, is one of the biggest health and safety risks associated with roofing schemes, Even when the equipment is not in use, if it is stored on site during the roof refurbishment programme it continues to present a fire risk outside of working hours due to the potential for accidental or malicious mishandling. It is essential, therefore, that secure storage is provided for any equipment stored on site during an installation.
Other health and safety factors Other health and safety factors aside from hot works were also considered. For example, the solvent-free and completely odourless system enables work to proceed without the need for evacuation or operational stoppages. This was crucial to the end-client, especially in a hospital environment, where the waterproofing material caused no further disruption to the building’s occupants.
Cold-applied systems can also typically be installed as an overlay of the existing substrate to provide robust waterproofing protection with a long service life of up to 25 years. In addition, Kemperol will bond to a great many substrates, allowing its use in many situations without having to remove and dispose of the existing roof covering. This saves time, and avoids the cost of removal and environmental issues associated with disposal. In many cases the Kemperol roof system can be installed or repaired without the need for scaffolding – a further cost saving that also minimises disruption on the site.
Lifecycle costings
The superior robustness and durability of cold-applied waterproofing compared with other systems makes lifecycle costings particularly attractive for those who may have a vested interest in the long-term performance of the roofing system. This was especially important to the Trust to ensure whole-life cost savings for the hospital.

This project could have presented a number of problems and time delays if an alternative roofing material was specified, but it was not only easy to transport with minimal materials and apparatus to carry, but the liquid- applied resin meant we could get underneath and around the complex roof structure and detailing with ease to provide a seamless waterproofing solution.”
A ‘clean bill of health’
Following the roof refurbishment at Lewisham Hospital, the NHS Trust can now be assured that the roof areas of the main building and outpatient department will serve the local community for many years to come. Thanks to the knowledge, skills, and experience, of the both the contractors and the technical team at Kemper System, and the suitability of the Kemper System products, the roof at Lewisham Hospital now has a clean bill of health.
