INSTITUTE NEWS Loyalty and commitment acknowledged

IHEEM’s Company Affiliate Members play a key role in supporting the Institute and its activities, particularly in terms of imparting engineering, facilities management, and technology knowledge and expertise which can be shared with the membership and the wider sector. IHEEM now has over 250 such members, and last year, in tandem with its 75th anniversary, decided to honour the commitment, loyalty, and contribution of the 10 longest-standing by presenting each with a special glass trophy and certificate.

During 2018, the Immediate Past- President, Pete Sellars, and his successor, Ian Hinitt, took the opportunity to present the awards to those senior representatives of the 10 Company Affiliates attending events such as August’s evening reception on board HMS Warrior in Portsmouth, and November’s Presidential Address in London. Those Affiliates yet to receive their awards will receive them over the next few months. What, however, do Company Affiliates feel they get out of IHEEM membership, and what can they give back, both to the Institute and wider sector?

An honour to be associated Brandon Medical, a UK designer and manufacturer of ‘world-leading technology’ for operating theatres, critical care areas, and primary care institutions, said: “For over 70 years, we have provided healthcare professionals with reliable, high quality, and affordable medical equipment packages for operating theatres and critical care. Continuous investment has enabled us to meet the ever- changing needs of our healthcare customers. As one of the 10 oldest IHEEM Company Affiliate members, we are honoured to be associated with the 75th anniversary of an organisation whose primary role is to support the introduction of developing technology to the healthcare estates sector.

“As an innovative British engineering company, we view our IHEEM membership as integral to being part of the wider community of UK healthcare engineers – a way to share engineering knowledge and experience sector-wide. Frictionless communication and constant collaboration between us, healthcare- dedicated product developers, and the healthcare estates engineers using our equipment, ensure the best and safest outcomes for the health of our nation.”

An influential organisation Manufacturer and supplier of bedhead systems and medical supply units, Cableflow, says it chose to become an IHEEM Company Affiliate member a number of years ago, seeing the Institute as ‘an important and influential organisation for our industry’. The company said: “Associating our brand with other key industry brands and organisations across the healthcare platform underlines the high quality benchmark we apply to our product development, and of course we can also contribute our experience and expertise to help promote competence and commitment to best practice. Continuing professional development is a key to career development, and here the Institute takes the lead in ensuring that modern best practice is balanced with past learning experiences.

“As a Company Affiliate member, we can engage with a broad network of healthcare professionals across our sector. IHEEM also plays an important part in influencing the development of standards, regulatory documents, and knowledge-based guidance. After 75 years it continues to demonstrate its awareness and leadership, and we are delighted to be able to support it and its work.”

Training pedigree

Training establishment, Eastwood Park’s association with IHEEM has been a long one. CEO, John Thatcher, says: “As the Institute for the sector we specialise in, it has always been important for us to support and work with IHEEM’s members, many of whom we have trained throughout their engineering and FM careers in healthcare. Our work with IHEEM in the development and management of the Authorising Engineer (Decontamination) programme maintains and further cements our close working relationship.

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside IHEEM over the years, and we have regularly supported Institute events. To know that IHEEM is accessible, prepared to offer support and advice, and to work together with us, is invaluable. Eastwood Park was delighted to be able to help IHEEM celebrate its 75th year last year, and honoured to be recognised as one of the Institute’s long-standing supporters. We look forward to a reciprocal approach in support of our 50th celebrations this year.” Founded in 1862, Hoare Lea – another of IHEEM’s 10 longest-standing

Company Affiliates – is reportedly the country’s largest and longest-standing firm of mechanical and electrical consulting engineers. Healthcare partner, Graham Cossons, says: “We have been designing hospitals for most of that time, including, for example, the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, which in 1903 was the world’s first air-conditioned hospital. IHEEM is widely recognised as an excellent source of best practice, guidance, and information, for healthcare engineers. HEJ is packed full every month with useful insight into new engineering systems, new healthcare buildings, and the latest healthcare technology. The annual conference is the destination to hear from government and industry leaders on a variety of topics relevant to our practice, as well as to network with top estates professionals, designers, contractors, and suppliers. We are very proud to have been associated with IHEEM for the majority of its 75 years, and privileged to be an affiliate member. We look forward to a long and continuing relationship supporting IHEEM activities for many years to come.”

Credibility assured

BOC, meanwhile, says it is ‘very proud to be an IHEEM Company Affiliate Member’. The company added: “Our membership provides us with credibility when dealing with customers either on their site, or in one of our training rooms. Our successful relationship with IHEEM gives our customers the confidence in our engineers and trainers which they have come to expect from a company like BOC. We are an industry- leading organisation, and being a member of IHEEM demonstrates this. Membership of the Institute also provides the opportunity to meet with other members to discuss, develop, and help drive standards throughout the Industry. With IHEEM having just celebrated its 75th anniversary, BOC is honoured to be associated with the Institute, and would recommend joining to anyone who is considering doing so, since by doing so they will become part of an organisation which promotes competence and commitment to best practice, and constantly pushes for the highest standards.”

The other five longest-serving Company Affiliates are: Atlas Copco Medical, Shire Controls, Bender UK, Medical Air Technology, and Midland Medical Services.
