, three-storey building will be linked to the existing hospital, with the first floor fitted out as part of the contract to accommodate one of the UK’s first purpose-designed Ambulatory Care units. It will provide medical, surgical, and nurse practitioner-led care ‘in a relaxed and comfortable environment’, allowing up to 150 patients to be treated the same day across four specialisms, without the need for hospital admission.

The McAvoy Group has been awarded its largest healthcare project to date – a £15 m contract for the offsite construction of a new wing at the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington. Due for completion this Spring, the 6,500 m2

using ‘an advanced offsite solution’ to reduce the build programme to under 12 months. The project features ‘a number of innovations in offsite construction’. It will use larger, bespoke modules up to 14.85 m long specially engineered to provide a structural flooring solution that ‘seamlessly integrates’ with the existing hospital building.

McAvoy will construct the new wing Mechanical ventilation, heating, and

cooling systems, will be installed in the ceiling voids in the McAvoy factory – believed to be a healthcare sector first. Designed by P+HS Architects, the new wing will replicate the appearance of the existing hospital, which opened in 2015 – with a faceted external facade to create curved ends – and will be finished in blue and white render. This hybrid construction solution has a three-storey offsite structure with an in-situ built curved link on each floor, a rooftop plant room, and full-height stair towers. The 2,000 m2

Medstor has supplied over 370 full-height and base cabinets to facilitate location of goods and eliminate stock-outs, plus 250 procedure trolleys and mobile carts, for the ‘new’ Chase Farm Hospital in Enfield. Self check-in kiosks, an online patient portal, and a mobile appointment manager ‘app’ at the recently redeveloped healthcare facility are just some of the many patient-focused innovations. Medstor said: “Our stylish storage solutions will maximise space and streamline materials handling, and will also operate with the hospital’s Genesis Automation supply chain software system. This traceability and inventory management platform will help

‘Complete supply chain visibility’ at ‘new’ Chase Farm the hospital to improve patient safety and

save money.”

Medstor, which has ‘a long and successful relationship’ with the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, supplied the products in two phases. The first saw it provide over 370 HTM 71 full-height and base cabinets. These offer ‘the highest level of organisation’, while their use in conjunction with Genesis Automation will ‘ensure the hospital has complete visibility of the supply chain’. In Phase Two it supplied 250 procedure trolleys and mobile carts in a variety of sizes and heights. It said: “Flexible, robust, and easy to manoeuvre, these provide safe, efficient storage space, but are also moveable,

hygienic work surfaces that bring essential items to exactly where they are needed, quickly and easily.”

Regular planning meetings, the supply of drawings and samples for review, and extensive trialling, all helped to ensure that the hospital received storage products that fitted its needs.
