INSTITUTE NEWS Is your CPD up to date?
IHEEM’s Membership Development manager, Chris Parker, is keen to remind all IHEEM registrants and members registered with other Engineering Council- licensed engineering institutes of the need to undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and, equally importantly, to record the fact that they are doing so.
He explained: “For some time now, IHEEM has undertaken a rolling programme of the auditing of registrants’ CPD records in accordance with this requirement. From 1 January this year, recording of CPD has been mandatory for all Engineering Council registrants. In addition, from 1 January 2020, those who persistently refuse to engage in the process may be subject to removal from the Register. This activity of recording CPD applies to registrants at all levels –
Gain a degree while you work
IHEEM is to continue to support the University of Portsmouth Learning at Work programme. Membership Development manager, Chris Parker, said: “This programme enables a student to achieve a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree while remaining at work. To those who entered the workplace early (instead of pursuing higher education), the programme is ideal, as it uses project-based study to gain academic credit towards degree-level qualifications. These, in turn, can lead to professional registration as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.”
Many students are awarded prior learning credit towards their degree, either through certificated learning (e.g. HNC, HND etc.), or through experience, assessed by portfolio. Mike Punt, the University’s director of Learning at Work, said: “Each student has a specialist tutor who guides their work, and ensures that it is at the correct academic level. Contact with the tutor and the University is usually by email, phone, or Skype. Your tutor will work with you and your employer to identify suitable projects that will give you the opportunity for appropriate learning. “We have a comprehensive online learning environment, with all the resources our students need to complete their studies.” For details: visit

Engineering Technician, Incorporated Engineer, and Chartered Engineer, and all Institutes are complying, so if you are not registered with IHEEM, you may hear from another Institute.”
Chris Parker says that ‘while no doubt’ all IHEEM members undertake Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Code of Conduct, ‘but mainly because they know it is a good idea and benefits both they and their employer’, ‘rather fewer record it, and fewer still submit their record for approval and feedback by IHEEM’. He added: “This is common across all engineering institutes, and, for this reason, the Engineering Council has, for a number of years, required all of its licensed institutes to monitor its registrants’ CPD activities. The aim is to ensure that all are appropriately planning
and reflecting upon their CPD activities, while by providing feedback it is hoped the exercise will benefit submitting members by endorsing their current practice if found satisfactory, or pointing out areas for development if required.” He continued: “The programme of audit will continue this year, and we will shortly contact selected registrant members requesting them to submit their CPD records covering the last 36 months. These will be reviewed by a peer group of IHEEM registrants, and the relevant members provided with constructive feedback.
“So, if you do not already do so, start to record your CPD – using an online system, Word, Excel, or any other appropriate format – and be ready to benefit from some first-class feedback.” For further guidance visit the IHEEM website, telephone 023 9282 3186, or email:
