INSTITUTE NEWS

the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre in Stanford on Soar near Loughborough. This will examine the development of the business case for the facility and its clinical model, with stakeholder involvement. Sustainability, energy saving, and net carbon zero, will also be key conference themes, for example with presentations focusing on energy efficiency in Italian healthcare settings. The design of operating theatres will be discussed – including a look at new technology for hybrid surgery environments, and a case study from Poland on the design of operating theatres from both a clinical functionality and a surgical user comfort perspective. There will also be a look at the Birmingham and Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group’s development of its Primary Estate Strategy, covering the input of appropriate groups – the relevant people in NHS organisations and the public – in making informed decisions to best serve the sizeable local population.”

Keynote speakers

Keynote speakers already confirmed include Simon Corben, Director and Head of Profession, NHS Estates and Facilities, at NHS England and NHS Improvement. He and his team are focussing on providing the toolkit and expertise to assist the NHS in the next stage of delivering the improvements set out in the Five Year Forward View and the Naylor Report. Another keynote speech will be given by Professor Allan Short from the University of Cambridge, the Principal Investigator for the UK-

China EPSRC/NSFC-funded ‘Low Carbon Climate-Responsive Heating and Cooling of Cities’ (LoHCool) project, which is focusing on carbon reduction opportunities in ‘mega-cities’ in China. Allan Short has been the Professor of Architecture at the University of Cambridge since 2001; his work focuses on the design of sustainable buildings. Other organisations contributing to the conference this year include the Society of Public Health Engineers (SoPHE), ProCure22, and Architects for Health.

Diversity and Inclusion at Healthcare Estates

IHEEM has long recognised the need to drive diversity and inclusion within the healthcare sector, and has a dedicated Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, founded in 2017, championing and spearheading this work. The current members are Chair, Kim Shelley of ETA Projects, Claire Hennessy,

Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Manju Patel, NHS Grampian, and Duane Passman, Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. This year’s focus for the Group will be on highlighting issues for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ+) engineering professionals, and considering some of the current and historical barriers to inclusion. Kim Shelley said: “There is a strong opportunity to present positive examples and tools that can help to develop a more inclusive culture within engineering for LGBTQ+ engineers.” This year’s Healthcare Estates will include a programme of content from IHEEM’s Diversity and Inclusion Group, with several inspirational speakers. More updates on this strand of work will be reported on in the next few issues of HEJ. For more information on Healthcare Estates 2020, telephone 01892 518877, or visit www.healthcare-estates.com

Coronavirus concerns see AE and Dublin events rescheduled members can rely on in terms of

Following the publication of an Operational Policy Statement (see page 9), and in the light of the ongoing developments with the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Institute took the ‘unprecedented decision’ last month to defer the Authorising Engineering Conference due to be held at Cranmore Park in Solihull from 18 March 2020 to 8 July this year, and to similarly postpone the planned IHEEM Northern & Republic of Ireland Conference, Exhibition, and Awards Dinner scheduled for 6-7 May at Croke Park, Dublin, to 2-3 November 2020. Both rescheduled events will take place at the same venues. IHEEM said: “The Institute takes its corporate responsibility very seriously, and is mindful not to draw its members away from their vital roles within the NHS and wider EFM healthcare community at this critical time.”

It continued: “We recognise that the AE Conference is an annual event that

updating their CPD and developing their knowledge and understanding, which is why we have worked closely with the venue to defer this event to a new date. We would like to thank those who signed up for their decision to attend, and hope you will be able to join us on the new date – 8 July 2020. If you cannot make this date, IHEEM will refund you in full; please speak to a member of the team. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and hope you will understand the Institute’s decision.” For the same reasons, the IHEEM 2020 Northern & Republic of Ireland Conference, Exhibition, and Awards dinner, due to be held in May at Croke Park in Dublin, has now been rescheduled to take place in early November at the same venue. Any attendees who cannot make the 2 and 3 November dates can contact IHEEM Head Office for a full refund. Melissa Glass, IHEEM’s Marketing & Events

Manager, said: “IHEEM has liaised with the Croke Park Hotel, whose staff have assured us that all hotel bookings which have been made for the May event can and will be transferred over to the new dates at no additional cost.”

Pete Sellars, IHEEM’s CEO, said: “By taking swift and decisive action to defer these two events, we have been able to retain the high quality venues and speakers we had originally booked. The reaction to our decision both across the Institute and externally has been extremely supportive, and the Operational Policy Statement we issued was welcomed by Council and chairs of Committees, Branches, and Technical Platforms. Fundamentally, the safety and health of everyone involved in IHEEM’s business will always be our number one priority.” For any further questions, telephone IHEEM Head Office, on 023 9282 3186.
