The Trust is working with other providers to ensure it has a model in place for distributing orthopaedic work across Birmingham and Solihull. The increased capacity means more patients can be treated and extra income generated. In all, 2,500 additional patients per year can now be treated thanks to the new modular theatres and wards. The work has also created 130 new medical and therapeutic jobs. There are now two extra theatres running 24 hours a day, six days a week, potentially increasing to seven days a week. Projects such as this bring employment opportunities for local people. The Trust is the area’s biggest employer, and 70% of its staff live within 3-4 miles of the hospital. We are proud to be associated with creating jobs and opportunities within the Birmingham area.


A better working environment For years, staff at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital have been used to working in ageing theatres, constantly battling to service and maintain them. The staff are delighted with the space they have now. Once there were no windows in operating theatres, but now we have high-level windows that allow natural daylight into the room. There are new laminar flow canopies which enable a flow of highly filtered, ultra-clean air to envelope the patient to reduce the risk of surgical site infection. This is a modern facility, and the plant is much more efficient. Layout is vastly improved. The surgeons have their scrub facilities adjacent to theatre. The anaesthetic room is significantly bigger, with more space to work and increased storage, so important equipment and supplies are closer to hand. The recovery area is immediately within reach of the theatres. There is an improved flow, so patients can be prepared in a quiet area.

It means that patients are being operated on in the highest quality surroundings, using the best technology. It is an innovative build, and it has been transformative for the Trust and everyone who works here.


Discussions are well underway between the Trust and ModuleCo Healthcare to finalise the requirements for the second phase of the project, which is due for completion in the second half of 2020. This phase will include two further theatres and an additional 11 beds. The Trust is already seeing the benefits of the new modular healthcare facility to both patients and staff, and the organisation says it would have no hesitation in considering further modular builds. The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is the latest in a growing number of hospital Trusts choosing to increase capacity by going down the modular route. The appeal is driven by many factors, but three in particular – the quality of the product, the speed of delivery and construction, and the minimal disruption caused within the hectic everyday working environment of an NHS hospital. In addition, ModuleCo Healthcare’s ability to encompass all of the funds for the project into one monthly rental means the amount of capital that the Trust requires is minimal, thereby easing typical NHS budgetary pressures.

Philip Begg


Professor Philip Begg is executive director of Strategy and Delivery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and provides executive leadership at Board level on strategy. His role is to lead on the implementation of the five-year strategy and push forward the organisation’s transformation agenda. Professor Begg holds research positions at the University of Birmingham and the University of Kentucky, and was formerly the head of Academic Research/Education at University Hospitals Birmingham. He has a history of management positions, which sit alongside a successful clinical career.


Alan Wilson


Alan Wilson is the managing director of ModuleCo Healthcare, which says it has been providing high-class healthcare facilities to the NHS since 2002. The company only operates in the healthcare sector, and is a specialist in providing flexible hire solutions for all its facilities. MCH is included on two important frameworks – the NHS Shared Business Service (SBS) Framework, and the Crown Commercial Services Framework. During the past 18 years, the company has successfully delivered over 100 specialist modular healthcare facilities across the UK. MCH says it can assist ‘with all aspects of the modular facility’, including design, offsite construction and installation, maintenance, and funding.
