Interactive tool will support members’ career development
March 2021 saw the launch by IHEEM and HEFMA of the document, ‘Future Leaders – Healthcare Estates & Facilities Management Joint Workforce Strategy’, which set out a number of key long-term objectives to support all members in their career development across the many and varied roles within the sector. A key output of the
strategy is the development of a Career Route Map (see graphic) covering in excess of 50 job roles, split across five paths: n Estates Management functions. n Facilities Management services. n Capital Projects. n Leadership and Administration. n Specialist Roles.
Information will be provided against each role, including a general job overview, and qualifications, skills, and experience requirements, as well as highlighting opportunities to progress through the sector. Both organisations will be using this interactive tool to highlight gaps in the current system, and, most importantly, will identify and provide direct links to appropriate and accredited training for individuals to progress and develop to the next stage of their careers. It is important to
set clear career pathways and development opportunities for those already working within the sector, as well as making these opportunities more attractive to a wider audience – and especially those new to the industry, to gain a better understanding of how to begin their career, and where roles may lead them to in the future.
In addition, the Career Route Map aims to raise awareness and visibility around the many different areas and roles within healthcare estate management and healthcare engineering, in response to concerns around the shortage of information on, and overall knowledge and awareness of, the healthcare EFM profession. This easy-to-use interactive Career Route Map is currently under development, and will be made available under the ‘Resources’ section on the IHEEM website from this month (May 2021).

New Offer to Authorising Engineers to be highlighted at online training event
The fourth annual Authorising Engineer Conference has now been deferred until 2022.
However, IHEEM is planning a series of AE online training events this year. The first will take place on 9 June ‘virtually’ via the GoToWebinar platform. 'The importance of the role of an IHEEM Registered Authorising Engineer' event will cover a range of topics throughout the day, including ‘the new offer to AEs’, highlighting the benefits; a dedicated session on the new ‘one-stop-shop’ bespoke CPD system that the Institute has developed, and ‘The importance of AEs from the client perspective,
the requirements of regulators and governing bodies, and how this aligns with the new Terms of Reference and Code of Conduct'. The day's concluding session will be a panel discussion around the AE’s contribution to supporting the NHS and strengthening the AE offer to the healthcare system, taking thoughts and questions from the audience.
Full details on each session, and the registration links, are live on the IHEEM website, and accessible via the events calendar. Please visit
