IFHE NEWS Plenty to look forward to at 2022 Toronto event

Planning continues for the IFHE’s 27th annual Congress, scheduled for 17-21 September 2022 in Toronto, Ontario Canada (HEJ – April 2021), say the event’s organisers, the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society (CHES). Jim McArthur, IFHE 2022 Congress Chair, said: “We look forward to welcoming healthcare engineers and facilities managers from around the world to Toronto in 2022. We have recruited members from around the globe to participate in the planning of this event.”

Following IFHE meetings on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 September 2022, other activities will include a golf tournament on September 18th, as well as the Companion excursion to Niagara Falls (one of the Wonders of the World). The day will be topped off with the Opening Reception at the internationally renowned Hockey Hall of Fame located in Downtown Toronto.

The programme portion of the Congress will commence on Monday 19 September. The morning will include opening ceremonies, followed by the keynote speaker, and concurrent educational sessions. The Companion

Programme for the day will include entry to the Royal Ontario Museum, and lunch and shopping in Yorkville. Jim McArthur said: “The Monday evening’s Gala Banquet will take place at the Liberty Grand Ballroom, complete with entertainment to please all.” The programme will continue on Tuesday 20 September with a second keynote speaker, followed by concurrent sessions, and the day will end with closing ceremonies. “There will be plenty of opportunities to visit the exhibition floor to spend time with our vendors and exhibitors,” Jim McArthur added, “while

tours of local hospitals are scheduled for Wednesday 21 September. We hope to see you in Toronto in 2022. September is a great time of year to spend additional time in Toronto, or explore other parts of Canada.”

‘Virtual’ or ‘hybrid’ event options being considered At its most recent meeting, IFHE’s Exco

(Executive Committee) considered the ‘virtual congress’ held in January (see also pages 19-21), which was attended by 1204 delegates from 61 countries, reports the Federation’s Joint General Secretary, Andy Wavell (pictured). He said: “It was acknowledged that the Congress had to be set at the best time for delegates from around the world to attend; hence the afternoon sessions. Although it was not possible to meet face-to-face, the experience was seen as a positive one, in that it was easy to dip in and out of sessions, and there were opportunities to meet the exhibitors and enter a ‘coffee room’ to meet other delegates. The main concern, however, was that the sessions were short, which left little time for questions. Having been the first time that a ‘virtual’ event had been organised for IFHE, Exco felt such an online format should be considered for future events, either in entirely in digital form, or in conjunction with a face- to-face event.

“It had been hoped to invite former Presidents and other officers to the 50th anniversary Congress, but as it was impossible to do this, Exco agreed that a

celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of IFHE will be included in the next Congress when it is held in Toronto, Canada. All those invited to Rome will be invited to Canada. It is planned to provide commemorative pins to former officers, and all those who attended the ‘virtual’ event in Rome.

Andy Wavell.

“As the IFHE Council will not meet again until September 2022, Exco will organise an interim meeting towards the end of 2021, which again will be a ‘virtual’ event.”

Other recent topics of discussion have been the Energy Initiative launched at Congress – seen as a way of encouraging IFHE members to report their energy consumption, with a view to reducing consumption and heading towards zero carbon emissions. The ‘bonus’ is that IFHE will publicise figures, and make awards to those achieving reductions. To facilitate this process, IFHE has received a copy of IHEEM and HEFMA’s guide, A Healthcare Engineering Roadmap for Delivering Net Zero Carbon, which will be made available to all members.

“In conjunction with IHEEM,” Andy Wavell continued, “Exco is looking at another publication, Health Facility Guidelines, to see how this vast amalgamation of knowledge can be made available to all ‘A member’ organisations. Exco is currently awaiting further information on this. IFHE continues to work with the World Health Organization, and is currently awaiting further instructions for COVID and other healthcare projects. “Following the success of the 2021 IFHE Digest, a request has been sent out for articles to appear in the next issue, due for publication later this year. Of particular interest this time are the experiences that estates and facilities professionals have had during the COVID crisis – including with oxygen supplies, ventilation issues, and maintenance provision in COVID areas and ‘housekeeping’ problems.”
