SPONSORED BY HEALTH SECTOR NEWS First courses run at new training centre
Eastwood Park last month delivered the first courses from its brand-new training facility at its South Gloucestershire site. Among them was the Authorised Person Lift Management (HTM 08-02 & LOLER & SAFed) course, taking full advantage of the centre’s ‘new and comprehensive’ lift training lab, which includes fully working traction, MRL (a Machine Room-less lift), and hydraulic lifts. The classroom area and practical labs share the same space, so a hands-on demonstration is never far away from classroom-based theory. Eastwood Park said: “This course has itself undergone a transformation, extending from four to five days to allow for the additional practical experience this new lift training facility affords, particularly around MRLs. Anyone who has completed lift training with us previously will notice an immense difference.”
Also delivered at the new facility for the first time were several electrical courses, including the Authorised Person LV (HTM 06-02) and refresher and Competent Person LV (HTM 06-02) courses, and
Valve to ‘prevent backcontamination’ Challis MS says it has designed and
patented the Challis Ag+ Sentinel Valve in response to ‘a general acceptance’ that ‘the majority’ of Pseudomonas flare-ups involving taps are a direct result of back contamination of the open tap spout by contaminated aerated water droplets.
It said: “This is often compounded by limescale and biofilm build-up on the tap diffuser components. To prevent this combination of airborne contaminates, open- ended spouts, limescale, and biofilm build-up, we need to negate them using innovative design."
The Challis Ag+ Sentinel Valve is made of medical grade silicone, and is designed to fit and replace the diffuser internals currently fitted to all taps. The valve opens when the water flows, and closes instantly when flow ceases, ‘effectively and efficiently sealing off the tap spout when not in use, and preventing back contamination by airborne water vapour’. Also available on request, ‘for added protection’ within the Sentinel Valve, is “an innovative 99.99% copper ‘bullet’”, which kills bacteria on contact.

Authorised Person (Decontamination) – role & responsibilities training. Eastwood Park said: “Learners enjoyed our spacious, modern classrooms, and, once again, easy access to practical equipment. This will be further enhanced very shortly, with high voltage training using our ‘real-life’ HV open ring system, with fault simulations, live HV phasing, high voltage pressure testing, cable fault location and spiking, practical protection testing, and HV grading studies.” Work continues to fit out the rest of the centre, with other training portfolios to be introduced there on a phased basis throughout 2021. Until then, Eastwood Park will deliver its full training offering
from a mix of existing and new facilities. CEO, John Thatcher, said: “I am delighted to see the first phase of training commence at our new centre after so many years in the planning, and what has been a real ‘journey’ for us here. At times it would perhaps have been easier to lease a building on an industrial estate in which to continue training delivery, as many other providers do. However, we have persevered, and it is fantastic that the potential I saw on first joining Eastwood Park over 30 years ago is finally being fully realised.”
He added: “Thank you to our industry colleagues for supporting and bearing with us this far, especially those supporting us with equipment to fit out the new facility. This is a real opportunity for Eastwood Park to prove itself as a leading training provider to the wider engineering and estates and facilities management sectors, but also for suppliers to showcase their equipment to these markets, so if you are interested in being a part of this exciting venture, please get in touch.”
Major bespoke modular developments at Northampton General Hospital During this year Catfoss will
be installing three bespoke permanent modular facilities at Northampton General Hospital, providing around 4,000 m2
of new clinical
and retail accommodation, representing an investment by the Northampton General Hospital Trust of £15.9 million to improve patient care. These developments will provide: n A new critical and intensive care unit. n An A&E extension with designated children’s A&E, including specialist CALM rooms.
n A new main entrance incorporating a retail area.
By selecting offsite healthcare specialist, Catfoss, to deliver these schemes using its offsite-constructed modular build system, the Trust will minimise site disruption, and significantly reduce the timeframe for installing and opening these much-needed facilities, ‘compared with via a traditional build delivery method’. Catfoss said: “By running programmes for enabling works and factory module production

in tandem, modular buildings are delivered in as little as half the time taken for traditional construction. In this instance, this will enable staff, patients, and visitors, to enjoy the amenities in all three new developments by late this autumn, with the first building due to open for use in late spring.” Stuart Finn, director of Estates and Facilities at Northampton General Hospital, said: “I’m delighted to see how much progress has been made for all three new developments. Plans have been in place for a long time, so it’s incredibly exciting to see the building work fully under way to improve the care and experience for our patients, staff, and visitors.”
