TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Updates New Pocket Guides
In 2026, IHEEM will further strengthen its portfolio of professional resources through the publication of two new Pocket Guides, each designed to support engagement, understanding, and good practice across the healthcare estates and engineering community.
• The Membership Benefits Pocket Guide provides a clear and accessible overview of the Institute’s membership,
outlining eligibility criteria, membership grades, and the professional value of being affiliated to IHEEM. It highlights the benefits of membership, including professional recognition, continuing professional development support, networking opportunities, and access to technical guidance and events. The guide also clarifies the application and assessment process, presenting a transparent and structured pathway for individuals seeking to join the Institute and progress within it. • Complementing this, IHEEM will publish a Pocket Guide on Authorising Engineers, developed in response to the
recently signed agreement with NHS England (NHSE). This guide will set out the role, responsibilities, and governance framework associated with Authorising Engineers, highlighting their essential contribution to safety, compliance, and assurance across healthcare estates. It will also detail the routes to appointment, including eligibility requirements, competency standards, assessment processes, and ongoing professional obligations, providing a practical and authoritative reference for both aspiring and established Authorising Engineers working within the NHS and the wider healthcare sector. “I am privileged to have been approved as an IHEEM registered Authorising Engineer (Electrical). After starting as an electrical apprentice with the East Midlands Electricity Board in 1979, this marks a
great achievement in my electrical career. Thank you to the IHEEM Electrical Technical Platform for their time and professionalism during the interview process – I appreciate the depth of knowledge and wisdom that is available to assist me in my career as an Authorising Engineer (Electrical) with the Institute. Thanks to my employer, MPM Professional Engineer Services (PES), for giving me the time and encouragement to achieve this recognition.”
