SHAPING THE FUTURE OF THE ESTATE
and the benefits of engagement with the Institute’s network of members via online delivery. Architectural Wallsz partnered with the Institute to deliver a well-received webinar on ‘Designing Compliant Negative and Positive Pressure Rooms for Healthcare’. More than 300 attendees joined the session, reflecting strong interest across healthcare estates and engineering teams in the design of compliant pressure-controlled environments. The event was organised by Peter
Davies and IHEEM Project Support Officer Kaltrina Azemi, whose coordination helped ensure a smooth and efficient programme. Peter Davies, Secretary of IHEEM Wales, opened the session and introduced speakers Ian Strangward, Managing Director, and Anna Cooper, Senior Designer at Architectural Wallsz. They outlined key principles behind negative and positive pressure room design, referencing relevant regulatory frameworks and Health Building Notes (HBNs) and Health Technical Memoranda (HTM) guidance, while highlighting practical considerations in real clinical settings.
Case examples showed how pressure-
controlled rooms are being used to meet evolving infection prevention and control requirements in both new-build and existing facilities. Supporting videos and technical explanations further illustrated design intent, including the growing need for single-patient accommodation and how HBN guidance informs compliant solutions. An interactive Q&A closed the webinar, with questions covering topics such as fire performance and installation processes. Detailed responses from the speakers provided attendees with clear, practical guidance.
The strong engagement and thoughtful discussion throughout the session highlighted the value of ongoing knowledge sharing across the healthcare estates community.
12 Health Estate Journal March 2026 Electrical technical
platform Updates made at the beginning of the year to BS 7671:2018 (IET Wiring Regulations) via the development and publishing by the IET and BSI of Amendment 4 (2026) saw significant contribution from members of the IHEEM Electrical Technical Platform. The changes to the standard Requirements for Electrical Installations (BS 7671:2018) (18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations) come at a critical time as the UK drives towards ambitious net zero targets, with the healthcare estate equally invested in the embracing of new technologies and integrating sustainable energy solutions. The input of IHEEM ETP members has helped shape the standard, which strengthens a safe, compliant, and modern electrical infrastructure, promoting best practice across the healthcare estate.
50 years of apprenticeship excellence
The Northern & Yorkshire NHS Assessment Centre celebrated its 50th anniversary in February, with an evening including a dinner, awards ceremony, and live entertainment, hosted at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead Hotel. Speakers at the event reflected on the Centre’s long standing contribution to developing skilled estates and engineering professionals for the NHS.
Established in 1974 by Mr W. Murray
OBE, the Centre now sees more than 96 per cent of apprentices completing their training and progressing into roles within NHS Trusts across the North East and Yorkshire, with many advancing into senior or chartered positions. The awards presented at the anniversary evening recognised excellence across every stage of the apprenticeship journey, celebrating
