Those undertaking medical instrument and device decontamination across the UK play a vital role in ensuring patient safety, and of course the associated Authorising Engineers (Decontamination) their own critical part in ensuring that good working practices and standards in this specialist field are maintained. In this issue of HEJ (pages 18-20), highly experienced AE(D), Graham Stanton, discusses the diversity and knowledge of AE(D)s as a group, and explains the registration process for IHEEM-registered AE(D)s – designed to be sufficiently rigorous to ensure that such personnel working in the healthcare sector have the necessary competences, skills, and expertise, to adequately discharge their duties. He explains that with the support of the IHEEM AE(D) Registration Board, which he chairs, and with the decontamination framework for AE(D)s in place at Eastwood Park, the Institute and the Gloucestershire training facility are determined to ensure a continuing stream of high-quality, skilled, AE(D)s for the future.

Graham Stanton also stresses the need to attract more able individuals working in a variety of decontamination roles to be AE(D)s, not just to undertake the role day-to-day, but equally to represent IHEEM and the UK on

Tandrup, the Denmark-based manufacturer of T-safe, has been awarded an £886,000 contract for the supply of point-of-use water filters by St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in London. Under the three-year contract, Tandrup will supply T-safe Medical Water Filters, in addition to delivering training and an integration with ZetaSafe, to enable electronic tracking and management of filter

deployment. T-safe Medical Water Filters will be utilised to maintain safe water systems, protecting both patients and staff from the risk of waterborne pathogen infection during a planned programme of remedial and infrastructure upgrade works.

A crucial factor in the success of the project will be the longevity of the T-safe Medical Tap and Shower Filters, which have been independently tested and validated to operate over a 92-day lifecycle. This, combined with a design that prevents air locking and optimises flow performance, serve to reduce the overall volume of filters used, alleviating the maintenance and

cost burden associated with shorter lifecycle filters.

Stephen McCreanor, managing director of T-safe UK, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen by St. George’s following a rigorous tender process that assessed the technical validation and performance of T-safe as a ‘sterilising grade’ membrane filter. We look forward to supporting the Estates team in implementing T-safe as a critical water safety control measure during the project.’’ Tandrup operates from four office locations across the UK, and supports over 350 NHS hospitals to effectively safeguard end-users from waterborne pathogen infection, through T-safe Medical Water Filtration and Antimicrobial Shower solutions. guidance and standards groups. In a separate article (pages 22-23), he explains how, with IHEEM’s support, he and a number of other decontamination and allied professionals have recently re-established the Decontamination Professional Expert Communications Forum (DPECF), after a considerable period of inactivity for it. One of the Forum’s key goals is to influence policy and practice in the decontamination of medical devices via the various Institutes and professional body members with an interest in the subject. In the past, the DPECF has played an influential part in providing expert advice, and reviewing other organisations’ (such as the Joint Advisory Group and the British Society of Gastroenterology) guidance prior to publication. The aim is for the newly reinvigorated Forum to operate under the umbrella of the well-established Central Sterilising Club, and, with its backing, and via liaison with professional bodies such as JAG, the BSG, the IPS, and the AfPP, for it to become the key expert group advising on all medical device decontamination issues UK-wide.
