Stericycle UK opens its largest alternative treatment plant in Europe
Stericycle UK, a provider of clinical waste and secure information destruction services, has opened an alternative treatment plant in Telford to process clinical waste generated in the UK – including testing materials, sharps, hospital waste, and personal protective equipment (PPE) created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The company processes clinical waste collected from NHS and other hospitals, pharmacies, care homes, dental practices, and laboratories, across the UK. Stericycle says the new plant will increase the speed, efficiency, and sustainability of this processing by using the latest technologies to steam-treat clinical waste, which is then used as a fuel for power generation and other industrial processes.
The plant is expected to reduce the amount of treated clinical waste sent to landfill by up to 48 tonnes per day. “The COVID-19 pandemic and the current immunisation drive are generating clinical waste across the UK health system,” said Stericycle UK Commercial director, James Cardwell-Moore. “As a company focused on safeguarding the world around us, we continue to invest in modernising our facilities with the latest innovative technologies to support the NHS and other healthcare customers across the UK. Stericycle is proud to play an essential role in mitigating the spread of COVID-19 – by removing potentially infectious clinical waste safely and disposing of it in an environmentally responsible way.”
‘Advanced’ PACS display launched
Bender has launched a new, ‘premium’ PACS Console for use in operating theatres and critical care areas, which ‘employs proven display technology to deliver superior quality images to clinicians viewing scans, images, and hospital records’.
Complementing turnkey and integrated theatre solutions already supplied by Bender UK throughout the UK and Ireland, the new display ‘fits seamlessly’ into walls and infrastructure alongside Bender CP9 touchscreen theatre control panels, ensuring a consistent look and feel within the theatre.
The flush-fit glass displays are available in 21-55 inch sizes, with 4K resolution in
27, 32, 43, 49, and 55 inch-sized monitors. All consoles can be configured as single or dual systems, which can be linked to slave displays.
Key attributes include:
n 6 mm-thick anti-reflective, anti-glare, and anti-fingerprint, glass screen, with ‘dust- free cleaning’, and IP65 rating.
n Separate backbox incorporating PC technology with fan-less cooling – reducing the turbulence of potentially harmful bacteria in the theatre. Low voltage boards consume less power and emit less heat.
n Consoles can be pre-set for DICOM, and connect seamlessly with Merivaara operating lights and a variety of medical imaging input devices and systems.
n Customised options include RFID readers, barcode scanners, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth connectivity.
n Comply with EM60601 and relevant healthcare OR display standards.
The modular design of the new PACS Console means any maintenance updates can be carried out away from the front panel, without compromising theatre availability or hygiene.
Stericycle operates 19 clinical waste management sites across the UK. These plants use the energy from incinerated waste to heat and provide hot water to hospitals on the same sites, turn waste into a solid fuel for burning to generate electricity, or transfer waste to the most appropriate processing plant. Energy from incinerated waste is also used to recycle sharps containers.
Speaker abstracts sought for IFHE and CHES events
CHES (the Canadian Healthcare Engineering Society) is seeking abstracts by 31 May this year for both its own 2022 National Conference, and the 26th International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE) Congress, which will take place alongside eachother from 17-21 September 2022 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto (HEJ – February 2021). The theme for the 2022 IFHE Congress is ‘Unleashing Innovation: Healthcare Engineering Excellence’.
CHES said: “Increasingly, healthcare engineering leaders are being called on at crucial moments to ensure the best possible patient care. Engineers were instrumental in the response to the

will investigate innovation and engineering excellence that contribute to ensuring that these changes will do no harm, and enhance the patient and family experience.”
global pandemic of 2020/2021, either by maximising existing healthcare spaces, or creating new/temporary spaces to deal with the novel virus. Innovative solutions and comprehensive analytics led many healthcare organisations to successfully deal with this historic event. There are many challenges facing the healthcare community, and it is through innovation and collaborative efforts that solutions will be found to current and future challenges facing the healthcare systems of the world.
