NEWS Lego expands its largest facility

In August, Denmark-headquartered Lego unveiled a 33,850 m² expansion at its factory in Monterrey, Mexico, as part of a $500m investment designed to increase production capacity at the site to meet growing demand. The expansion incorporates a fully

automated, high-bay warehouse and a building dedicated to assembling and decorating Lego products. The investment also includes a new moulding building, which is set to open in late 2024 and will contribute to a 50% increase in production capacity. An extra 1,000 jobs will be created, taking the total number of employees to more than 6,000. Senior Vice President of Americas Manufacturing, Nancy Sanchez, said: “We are the largest Lego manufactur- ing facility in the world. labour market and education system, and a positive operating environment. Combined, this has given us confi- dence to continue to invest in the site to support growth in the region.” The expansion in Monterrey is in addition to the $1bn investment in a new manufacturing site in Virginia, US, announced in June (see Injection World July-August 2022). The Lego Group is looking to expand its global

manufacturing network and locate factories close to its major markets. It currently has five manufacturing sites and by the end of 2025 will have expanded to seven: Monterrey, Mexico; Billund, Denmark; Kladno, Czech Republic; Nyíregyháza, Hungary; and Jiaxing, China, along with two new sites in Vietnam and Virginia, US. www.lego.com

Aimplas unveils new facilities

In July, research group Aimplas inaugurated its upgraded and expanded facilities at Valencia Technol- ogy Park in Spain. The new facilities, funded by the Valencian Institute of Business Competitiveness (IVACE) to the tune of €2.47m, will enable the

company to respond to growing demand to boost the circular economy through valuable R&D. A total of 2,200 m² has been added, including a pilot plant for polymer synthesis chemical process- es and research into the use of CO2 as a renewable raw

material. The site will also be used to develop new chemical recycling process- es and conduct research in the medical industry. An existing unit has also

been refurbished and is now divided into three sections: a mechanical recycling pilot plant to carry out mechanical recycling activities such as shredding, washing, separation and classification; a cutting-edge automated warehouse; and an area dedicated to generating ideas. The new facilities have been linked by a footbridge with a unique design that reflects the hexagonal structure of a polymer. www.aimplas.net
