makes it suitable for colouring engineering polymers, in particular PBT and PA used in charg- ing connectors. Furthermore, it has a proven ability to not negatively influence halogen-free flame retardant performance. Clariant adds that it achieves UL94 V-0 at 0.8mm with halogen-free flame retardants in engineering plastics and ensures compliance with RoHS 2.0 and IEC 61249-2-21. The colourant has good colour- and light-fastness properties. Holland Colours has developed Holcopearl
2287, designed for transparent and opaque colours, as well as co-development products for pearlescent and metallic colours. The spherical granules are claimed to be more compatible with new round-shaped PET grades, improving the dosing performance and creating less dust. The melting point is 200-230°C – higher than the company’s Holcobatch and Holcoprill products. Holland Colours says that trials using dosing and injection moulding machines in a PET preform production environment showed good dosing and minimal influence on process parameters. Holco- pearl for PET was validated for use with PET preform production, however, the company says that there is no reason why it would not work in other applications and is looking to support trials. The product is fully recyclable and is available as a one pack with processing aids and additives. The company adds that it meets all food contact and regulatory issues. It can also be combined with barrier solutions, such as UV blockers. Lifocolor has introduced the Metal Look effect masterbatch range based on a new pigment class offering a metallic appearance combined with impressive shine. A glossy metal effect is achieved in plastics without galvanisation or painting. The series consists of silver, chrome, bronze and champagne shades, but the range is being expanded. This new collection is claimed to be particularly suitable for transparent PP formulations and applications include high-quality cosmetic packaging. All formulations meet the requirements for food contact according to EC regulations. The Germany-based masterbatcher says that
Metal Look offers manufacturers new design options, with the colour saturation and brilliance achieved in one step during the moulding process. Enhancing the product with these easy-to-use masterbatches significantly improves processing reliability, meaning that semi-finished parts do not have to be outsourced for further treatment. tives are pre-certified to meet USP Class VI or ISO 10993 biocompatibility testing for global health- care applications, such as medical devices, phar- maceutical, and health and wellness products. The company says that the formulations will provide more resin choices and performance options for a greater range of applications, especially those that require biocompatible solutions. Functional performance additives that are now tested and certified for biocompatibility include antimicrobials, surface energy modifiers, content protection additives, laser-marking, and dimensional and physical property modifiers. Expanded resin families able to incorporate biocompatible colour- ants and additives include PA, thermoplastic vulcanisates (TPVs) and polystyrene. PolyOne has also introduced OnColor Brilliant Metallic colourants, a new line of special effect masterbatches that meet the need for paint replacement and premium surface finish. “Our customers across multiple industries have been looking for a paint-free solution with no trade-offs, which drove us to develop this new masterbatch,” says Rob Bindner, Americas Vice President & General Manager, Color and Additives. “It’s a cost-effective option for paint replacement on polymer parts and creates an exceptional metallic colour that continues through the part’s thickness. When moulded into plastic parts, manufacturers can eliminate painting and its associated process- ing steps for lower cost and longer-lasting, highly reflective surfaces.” The company says that Brilliant Metallic colour-
ants rely on superior coatings-grade pigments - uniquely shaped and sized particles enable these metallic shades to replicate the look of paint, and may even help customers to replace metal parts or plating for plastic parts. Standard shades include Brilliant Rose Gold, Brilliant Ice Blue, Brilliant Silver
