ongoing R&D efforts have allowed it to become a full-service provider of antimicrobial additives for manufacturers using resins such as PA, PE, PP, TPE, TPO, PVC and other polymers. Americhem now provides antimicrobial solutions to the fibre, nonwo- ven, moulded or extruded profiles markets through- out the world, including additives that remain stable during processing across a wide range of tempera- tures. Depending on the application, Americhem says that it offers a variety of different antimicrobial technologies through its nShield family of products to suit various polymer chemistries, surface charac- teristics and processing requirements. Americhem has also introduced ColorShine special effect technology for plastics that offers a metallic appearance and high-value visual appeal across finishing materials and substrates. This is designed to give manufacturers the ability to avoid metallic coatings and paint while achieving desired aesthetic qualities. The company says that ColorShine is a combination of Shine Advanced Materials’ metallic effect pigment technology and its formulatory and compounding technologies. ColorShine is available in pellet form, either pre-coloured or as masterbatch. Its mould-in-col- our composition allows manufacturers to poten- tially reduce cost and environmental impact by skipping the coating process entirely. Products developed with ColorShine are also claimed to offer better resistance against scratches than coated products, as well as good durability and low-temperature impact strength. ColorShine technology conforms to RoHS Directive 2002/95/E, EU REACH 8 PAHs, and the China GC 9685-2008 Hygienic Standard for Use of Additives in Food Containers and Packaging Materials. It is therefore an ideal product, says Americhem, for use in home appliances, 3C products, automotive applications, packaging and other materials.

“Our ColorShine solution is based on a propri- etary surface modification chemistry,” says Joseph Pang, Product Management Director of Shine Advanced Materials. “We modify the properties of aluminium pigments to create a new metallic dispersion with enhanced compatibility with plastics, as well as compliance with regulatory requirements, while retaining the optical properties of the aluminium substrate. The geometry and particle sizes are also carefully considered, selected and screened for the best-in-class optical proper- ties. In collaboration with Americhem’s team, we have developed a differentiated palette of metallic special effect products with superior L* values in excess of 70 units.” Clariant has developed ‘warning orange’ low-halogen controlled pigments for colouring high voltage components of electric and hybrid vehicles in line with latest regulations. As recommended by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE Interna- tional) and The German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association (ZVEI), orange has become critical colour coding for identifying high voltage systems. China Highway & Transportation Standard QC/T 1037-2016 also stipulates eye- catching orange for high voltage cables in road vehicles. Clariant says that its high chroma, high performance pigments offer a new low-halogen option for creating the typical strong orange shade for automotive charging cables, connectors, sockets and switches, without noticeable impairment of electrical properties. Importantly, they can support component manufacturers in following the new European regulation for halogen-free electric vehicle charging cables: DIN EN 50620:2017-11.
