Mixed results for European injection machinery groups
Annual results for European injection moulding machinery groups indicate they are not buckling under the strain of supply chain issues. Despite what it described as “an
extremely difficult trading environ- ment,” Sumitomo (SHI) Demag generated sales of €762m in 2022, which was 6% lower than in 2021 when the group achieved its highest turnover to date. CEO Gerd Liebig cited the impact
of material availability and costs. “Passing on these monthly cost increases to customers would hardly have been considered reasonable. We very much hope for more stable supply chains in 2023, as this will enable us to offset any cost increases with higher production efficiency.” Reflective of the rapidly evolving manufacturing landscape in Europe, the company noted substantial growth in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Italy, all locations where it has invested extensively in new subsidiaries in recent years. Although the automotive and consumer sectors performed below expectations, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s market share in packaging, medical and automotive sectors continued to increase. All-electric machine produc- tion reached another high point with Liebig stating that every fourth all-elec- tric machine produced in Europe is

now an IntElect. With the recent launch of two more high-performance machines its all-electric series, PAC-E and the IntElect S, the company is on track to continue this success, he said. “In view of the rising energy prices, the ROI for almost all applications has fallen drastically. This makes the investment in all-electric machines not only affordable, but now absolutely future-proof,” Liebig said. Wittmann Group reported sales of €376m for 2022, roughly equal to 2021, claiming a high order intake was adversely affected by supply chain issues, in particular with elec- tronic components. The Austrian group says it is expecting 10% growth in sales in 2023.
Considerable progress was also made with regards to the group’s building projects, including sizeable investments in ultra-modern machin- ing centers and extensions at various production units, while the total number of plants was increased with the addition of a new facility in Dilovası, Turkey. Arburg said its turnover reached €875m in 2022, which is up from €735m in 2021. As an indicator of its recent success, the latest Arburg Anniversary Days event, which was held from 8-11 March in Lossburg, Germany, welcomed 5,700 customers from 53 nations.
