HIGH TEMPERATURE THERMOPLASTICS | MATERIALS

example, through all manner of polyamide, to engineering grades of LFTs based on a PP matrix.” Chang and his colleagues recently collaborated

with VMAX New Energy, a Tier One supplier to one of China’s largest wireless charging infrastructure providers, on an 11KW wireless EV charging system now being introduced commercially. The system consists of two pads; one that attaches to the car’s chassis, called a receiver, and another mounted on the ground, called a transmission plate, which is connected to a power source. A non-halogen flame retardant Zytel HTN housing for the transmission plate protects the inner wireless charging system, preventing damage from drops, wheel compression, chemi- cals, oils, and UV rays. In collaboration with VMAX, Celanese devel- oped this Zytel HTN grade not only for perfor- mance, but also for high gloss and durability. In addition to the transmission plate’s housing, other components including the vehicle-side coil housing and the ground-side coil holder are made using Zytel polyamide and Zytel HTN. The wireless EV charger is a

good example of an application where high-temperature PPA and PA materials are required. For projects with even more severe temperature demands, the company can offer its Vectra and Zenite LCP materials. In a recent webinar, Young Kim,

Senior Principal Engineer at Celanese, explained how the company’s LCP solutions are critical to the success of 5G data transmission. The jump from 4G (15 MB/sec) to 5G (1-10 GB/sec) requires extremely robust materials to ensure reliable connectivity, and critical technical require- ments include low moisture absorption, consistent Dk/Df (dialectric constant/dissipation factor) values that enable reliable data transfer, and the ability to handle high temperatures. These solutions deliver HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) to 340°C to withstand lead-free soldering at 260°C for up to four minutes. Lati has introduced a range of special com- pounds called Laramid T based on PA9T, whose outstanding thermal performance combines with good compoundability, straightforward moulding and a competitive price vs. performance ratio, says the company. performance up to a CUT of 150°C, a critical threshold for many fields, allowing PA9T to compete with other PPAs and PPS in automotive, appliance, energy management, electronic and electrical devices. Lati says: “Thanks to the glass transition tem-

perature of the base resin, which is close to 130°C, Laramid T can immediately be counted among the resins suitable for use in applications where heat accumulation is a real problem. The polymer melts at between 290 and 310°C, meaning that its transition window is similar to those of other PPAs and of PPSs.” Laramid T compounds are suitable for moulding

complex thin-wall geometries with very narrow dimensional tolerances. Laramid T is a fully developed group of materi-

als featuring glass and carbon fibre reinforced grades for structural applications, thermally and electrically conductive, and self-lubricating compounds. Halogen and red phosphorous-free flame retardants are available in both reinforced and unreinforced versions. UL approval is said to be forthcoming. Compared to conventional PPA, Grivory HT6 from Swiss company EMS-Grivory has a 20°C higher glass transition temperature at a comparable melting point. The advantage is a

significantly increased load-bearing

capacity at high temperatures. The heat deflection temperature (HDT/C) has been increased by 50°C to 250°C, which is 20°C more than with PPEK. EMS-Grivory says that thanks to its extreme

creep resistance, Grivory HT6 is not only suitable for components at high working temperatures, but wherever the highest demands are made on dimensional stability and service life at lower temperatures. HT6 can also be used to design thin-walled components and thus reduce manufac- turing costs.

Enhanced technology Optoelectronics is another area that often neces- sitates the use of HTPs. At the 2023 Optical Fiber Communications Conference which took place in March at the San Diego Convention Center in California, SABIC highlighted several specialised, high-heat thermoplastics that can facilitate the adoption of cutting-edge optical technologies.
