Cubes and LSR Arburg says development of its hybrid and electric Allrounder machines focus on various performance and equipment variants. Of particular interest for the packaging sector is the Ultimate+, which offers injection speeds of up to 400 mm/s. Another example is the production of two-colour flip-top closures on an Allrounder Cube 2900. This cube mould machine with fast servo-electric toggle-type clamping unit is specially adapted to work with Foboha’s cube-mould technology. This system produces 32 two-colour flip-top closures in a cycle time of 8.5 s. The cube-mould technology increases output
and reduces the energy requirement at the same time. The batch size is 13,000 parts per hour. For injection moulding of the two different coloured PP components, two independently moving injection units are arranged horizontally and travelling above the mould mounting platen. With the four cube sides that can be used for production, mould filling, cooling and part removal run simultaneously. Twice the number of cavities are available with the same mould mounting surface. Together with its partner Foboha, Arburg implements complete cube systems, for example, with servo-electric cube turning and independent displacement axes. The mould is integrated into the control system. This allows free programming of all mould functions. The possibilities of moulding caps in liquid silicone rubber (LSR) were demonstrated by Sumitomo (SHI) Demag on its K2022 stand in partnership with LSR moulds and dosing specialist Elmet. A fully electric IntElect 180/570-250 machine produced 12 g LSR smart cap covers for energy drinks and food cans in a cycle time of 35 s. Sumitomo (SHI) Demag says the machine’s 570 mm
wide tie bar provides a generous tool space which is especially suitable for accommodating multi- cavity and complex tools. “Vacuuming and venting provide optimal tool
support,” says Rustam Aliyev, LSR expert and New Business Development Director of Automotive & Electronics at the company. “The synchronised sequence of the axes is highly precise and perfect- ly parallel to each other. Additionally, the system is extremely efficient, characterised by very low energy consumption. While the OPC-UA interface between the moulding machine and LSR dosing systems supports interoperability to support data contextualisation.” The manufacturing cell builds on an Elmet injection mould with the fully automatic SMARTshot E gate valve cold runner system. The material is supplied via Elmet’s SMARTmix TOP 7000 Pro dispensing system which is a new development from Elmet. With a footprint of only 1,150 x 790 mm, it is the most compact dispensing system for liquid silicone on the market, says Elmet.

Adaptive pressure Caps and closures continues to be an interesting and growing market for Netstal. “This is partly due to a wait-and-see attitude in Europe resulting from the regulation on tethered caps, which will apply in the summer of 2024,” says Stefan Kleinfeld, Product Manager. “As well as tethered caps, other market trends include lightweighting due to reduced diameters, reduced wall thicknesses and multi- modal materials with higher viscosity. Energy reduction and bigger moulds with higher cavitation are also issues driving new developments.” Netstal says that demand for more efficient machines, particularly more energy-efficient ones, is greater than ever. “Our machines for cap applications are typically hybrid ones,” says Peter
