EXTRUDER OF THE MONTH

Charlotte Pipe Head office:

CEO: Founded:

Employees: Ownership: Profile:

Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Hooper Hardison 1901

Around 1400 Private

Charlotte Pipe began in 1901 as a manufacturer of cast iron pipes and fittings, with a roster of 25 employees. It began producing plastic pipes in 1967, for drain, waste and vent applications. It now produces plumbing pipes and fittings in a range of materials, including ABS, PVC, CPVC – and iron. It claims to be the largest manufacturer of DWV pipes and fittings in the USA.

Product lines:

For all the changes in the company’s history, it is still focused on supplying plumbing products. Its plastics products include ABS, PVC, CPVC, FlowGuard Gold and ChemDrain pipes and fittings for both residential and commercial applications. FlowGuard Gold is a copper tube size series of CPVC products for both hot and cold water distribution. Its ChemDrain CPVC pipes and fittings are for chemical waste drain systems – for institutional, academic and commercial laboratories – where temperatures do not exceed 220F. Other ranges include ABS Plus, PVC Schedule 30 (for non-pressurised systems) and PVC Schedule 40, for pressure applications.

Factory locations:

The plastics division currently has six manufacturing locations in the USA, encompassing more than 1m sq ft of space for extrusion and injection moulding. The company recently announced plans to build a seventh plastic pipe facility, in Wichita, Kansas. The US$80 million investment will produce PVC pipe and create around 50 new jobs. Construction begins in January 2024, for completion in 2025.
