CORRUGATED PIPE | MACHINERY

Outside edge: latest news in corrugated pipe

Advances in pipe corrugators include models that make pipe at faster speeds – or in larger dimensions – and new inspection systems that assess the quality of finished products

Corrugated pipe is a key feature of many infrastruc- ture projects – especially in drainage applications. In one recent example, pipe from US-based ADS was used in an underground stormwater control system. A new warehouse facility in Greencastle,

Pennsylvania needed a large amount of storage underneath the proposed loading and parking areas. The construction consisted of five large retention beds – which used more than 17 miles of the company’s N-12 large diameter, corrugated HDPE pipe, plus fittings, gaskets and other components. The underground, watertight system was needed due to the local ‘karst topology’ – and a large impervious area of around 83 acres. It was named project of the year by the drainage division of the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI) last year. The contractor originally considered other

materials, including corrugated metal pipe. However, even though it could handle being buried at depths

of up to 22 feet, the ADS pipe – in diameters of 36-60in – was chosen mainly for its long service life. The N-12 dual-walled HDPE pipe has a smooth inner wall to allow optimum hydraulic flow, and its structural strength – from the corrugated outside – can support H-25 live loads with 12in of minimum cover for most pipe diameters, says ADS. Sections are joined using the pipe’s watertight integral bell and spigot with a factory-installed gasket. “This is a sustainable solution that takes care of

runoff and uses recycled plastic in the manufactur- ing of the HDPE pipe,” said Daniel Currence, director of engineering in PPI’s drainage division. “Corrugated HDPE pipe has the least environmental burden compared to other commonly used pipe for stormwater drainage and culvert applications.”
