In-house lab boosts
testing Italian screenchanger manufacturer Cofit has opened an in-house laboratory at its Lombardy headquarters, that is specifically dedicated to material and equipment testing. The company says the lab will speed up techno- logical innovation and product development. “Our in-house lab lets
us reach two goals”, said Alessandro Fabbri, general manager. “On the one hand, it helps us meet our customers’ needs: they often ask for tests on their materials and we could not support them in that before. On the other hand, it allows us to test all our new products independently. This means we can expand our product range quickly, while enhancing and upgrading our product portfolio.” The main investment in the lab is a single screw extruder – size 130. “It is a clear sign of how much we are increasingly focusing on research and development and technical innovation,” said Fabbri. Before the lab was
built, the company had to ask for customer support to carry out tests, which was not easy. “Today, the whole
process is faster,” said Fabbri.

Converting to co-extrusion raises use of recycled PVC
Inoutic, a German subsidi- ary of Deceuninck of Belgium, has ordered a new co-extrusion line from Battenfeld-Cincinnati. It is the third time within
a year that the profile manufacturer has upgraded a mono extrusion line into a co-extrusion line. Inoutic’s portfolio includes profiles for windows, doors and roller blinds, as well as facade and roof claddings made of Twinson wood-plastic composite and PVC. Coextrusion allows the company to combine a high quality surface with a core made of re-grind, so it aims to make more use of recycled PVC. Three of its existing mono extrusion lines have now each been extended by adding a 63mm co-extruder from the ConEx series.
PIPE INSTALLATION App helps with pipe installation
Advanced Drainage Systems (ADS) has launched a series of installation guides for mobile devices, offering everyday installation instructions for its thermoplastic pipe for both storm water management and sanitary sewer applications. With specific instructions from – job site handling and receiving, to in-field testing recommenda- tions – the app is designed to be an

easily accessible handbook for on-the-go contractors. Installation instructions are provided for N-12, SaniTite HP and HP Storm pipe products. “We wanted to provide
our customers with easily accessible instructions, which complement the educational and personal support efforts of our sales force,” said Bob Klein, executive vice president of sales at ADS. The app provides
information on topics including product handling, storage, joint assembly and installa- tion. It is available in English and Spanish and is free to down- load via the App Store and Google Play.

The geometries of the screws inside the existing mono extrusion lines were also optimised for co-extrusion by adjusting them to the required lower output rates. To take account of limited
space, the co-extruders were placed in piggyback configu- ration on the main extruders. They are fastened to the floor with linear guides, so can be moved easily. This gives the
processor maximum flexibility makes cleaning and maintenance work on the main extruder easier. All screws include a special coating (on top of molybdenum) to boost anti-wear protection – which is very important when processing PVC regrind or abrasive materials such as wood-plastic composites.
