Right: Protecta-Line barrier pipe from GPS ensures safe transport of water across brownfield sites

“I chose these pipes because I think they are the safest alternative on the market,” said Leidinger. “Our PE80 waste water piping system, installed in 1970, has suffered a few scratches over the years. Thanks to the more robust HDPE 100-RC, computer-controlled welding technology and additional scratch-resistant PP protective layer, that pipeline will be in service for the next 100 years without any problem.”

Expanding across Europe Meanwhile, UK-based GPS is expanding its Protecta-Line barrier pipe system to three Euro- pean markets: France, Denmark and Sweden. Available in sizes up to 630mm, Protecta-Line is

Two parallel PE100-RC pipelines were installed in two phases. It began in 2015/2016 with Agru PE100-RC pipes (with protective layer) in the eastern, 800m long section. After the two sewer pipes were welded from 12m long Agru Sureline III pipes with protective layer, two 800 m long pressure pipelines were stored in the water along the river until they were installed. In this phase, the pipe was installed by horizon-

tal directional drilling – in which the pipe is dragged through an underwater tunnel with several tonnes of force. The pipes offer double protection against the stress of this operation: first, they are made of point-load- and crack-resistant PE100-RC; and, they have an extra protective layer made of scratch-resistant polypropylene. The second installation phase has now begun. While the old sewage pipe in this area has been laid onshore, the new pressure pipeline will be placed on the lake bottom by means of concrete weights. The Agruline PE100-RC pipes with protective layer in OD 355 mm and in SDR 17 were butt-welded on site and temporarily stored at the water surface of the lake before being lowered to the bottom of the lake in an S-shaped curve.

an integrated barrier pipe and fittings system. Its tough multi-layer construction incorporates an impermeable aluminium barrier layer wrapped around a central core of either PE100 or PE80 pipe. The company says there has been increasing demand for a reliable barrier pipe system, to cater for the rise in redevelopment of brownfield sites. Protecta-Line is an integrated barrier pipe and fittings system, which removes the need for costly soil samples, offering a cost-effective solution for the safe transportation of water. The system meets the requirements set out in WIS 4-32-19, reassuring developers and housebuilders that any contami- nants remaining in brownfield sites cannot perme- ate into the water supply.

In addition to the high performance, Protecta- Line also offers installation benefits, says GPS: the lightweight nature of PE pipe, combined with quick and easy electrofusion jointing, saves time and costs on site. At the same time, the smooth bore resists corrosion, ensuring flow is not restricted over the lifetime of the system. Sophia Zhang, Protecta-Line product manager,

said: “As more brownfield sites are being redevel- oped across Europe, we have been getting increasing enquiries about supplying Protecta-Line in certain countries. Working closely with our Aliaxis partners in France and Scandinavia, we are now able to provide a safe and reliable barrier pipe system for transporting water through contami- nated land to customers in these countries.”

PP protection boosts gas main replacement

Radius Systems recently supplied 700m of its ProFuse peelable pipe as part of a gas mains replacement project in Edinburgh’s Old Town, carried out by gas distribution company SGN.

30 PIPE & PROFILE EXTRUSION | April 2018 The project, which involved the

replacement of an old medium pressure metallic main in Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, used 630mm SDR21 ProFuse pipe from Radius Systems. Made from black PE100, ProFuse

has a peelable polypropylene (PP) outer skin, which protects the pipe during handling, transportation, installation and reinstatement. SGN began the project in March 2017 and finished in December 2017.
