New grades help to boost water pipe performance


SABIC launched a number of new pipe grades and products at the recent Aquatec exhibition in The Netherlands. Firstly, its Vestolen A


Rely 5933RD is a PE100- classified material typically used for potable water distribution pipes, with extra resistance against chlorinated disinfectants and slow crack growth formation. For hot and cold water indoor pipe applications, the company has devel-


oped a glass fibre-rein- forced polypropylene random copolymer (PPR) called G1620B, which can help to reduce thermal elongation of pipes when exposed to fluctuating temperatures. To enable higher flexibil- ity when installing under- floor heating pipes, it also introduced HDPE P4200RT, classified as pipe material high density polyethylene raised temperature (PE-RT) Type II. The company has also developed its new Udmax GPE 46-70 tape, the latest addition to its portfolio of unidirectional fibre-rein- forced thermoplastic composite tape products. The glass-filled HDPE grade is designed for reinforcing


industrial applications, such as pipes, and claims to offer unmatched tensile strength. The product has a high glass content, combined with optimal thermoplastic resin impregnation, thanks to a proprietary high-pres- sure fibre impregnation technology (HPFIT), says the company. The tape has 70% fibre by weight content, which can raise tensile strength up to 957MPa – and in turn improves the burst pressure resistance of a pipe or vessel. “As pipe and pressure vessel manufacturers face rising demand for higher performance, longer life and greater safety, our advanced thermoplastic composite technologies can offer a practical solution for various industrial applications,” said Hans Warmerdam, commer- cial director for fibre-rein- forced thermoplastics. � www.sabic.com


MEDICAL TPE offers medical alternative to PVC


Colorite, part of Tekni-Plex that specialises in medical-grade com- pounds, showcased its Cellene line of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) compounds at the recent MD&M West show in the USA. While PVC compounds still take most market share, TPE alternatives are ideal for those that want phtha- late-free materials, says Colorite. “We have seen the development pipeline increase three-fold since our

MF RP, uses polypropyl- ene-random (PP-R) resin technology to boost performance in applica- tions such as high-pres- sure risers. Historically, if an


application demanded increased performance over the SDR 11 or SDR 17.6 Blue Pipe, its SDR 7.4 MF Green Pipe would be specified.
