Egeplast’s HexelOne pipe system has been certified by the DVGW for gas and drinking water applications

Round the bend Egeplast of Germany has expanded its offerings with a new range of ‘bent’ pipe. The pipes are available in PE100-RC, in black – though other colours are available on request, said the company. The company says that its EgeFit Seamless Bends achieves round pipe ends – and a uniform wall thickness over the entire circumference of the pipe – thanks to a new bending method for PE pipe, with complete process control and high process reliability. The bundling of pipe and bend production in a single location means that common bend dimensions can be delivered across Europe within 48 hours, it said. The technique ensures high dimensional stability and low ovality at the pipe ends, as well as uniform wall thickness distribution. Pipes produced in this way have good hydraulic properties and low flow resistors due to their very smooth inner surface. The technique can be applied to pipes for use in potable water, gas, wastewater and industrial applications. “The pipes are hygienically clean for potable
water applications, because all bends are sealed with end caps,” said the company. The ‘bent’ pipe will remain compliant with the
appropriate pressure class, says Egeplast – and is suitable for butt and electrofusion welding. At the same time, its HexelOne high pressure pipe system has been certified by the DVGW for gas and drinking water applications. The company says this approval – in high pressure applications – allows users to save cost in two ways: the corro- sion resistance of the pipes removes the need for cathodic protection; and, modern installation techniques will shorten construction time and reduce construction costs. It also opens new areas of use for the pipe, with permissible operating pressures of 30 bar for water and 16 bar for gas – which exceeds the range of applications previously covered by polyethylene (PE) pipes. pipe – with its reinforcement layer of high-strength PE strapping – is twice that provided by PE100 full-wall pipes, it says. Thanks to their protective layer and inner layer made of PE 100-RC, the pipes are suitable for trenchless installation. The DVGW certificate for drinking water covers dimensions from 90 to 125mm. In addition, HexelOne gas pipes have been certified for up to 160mm.
Through the mill A Canadian paper mill has installed an effluent pipe from Performance Pipe, to replace one made of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP). The GRP pipe, which had been subject to frequent repair, was subjected to temperatures up to 75°C. The effluent – which came from the bleaching of Kraft pulp – was acidic and caustic, which also affected the pipe. “Over the past five years, there have been over
10 repairs to maintain the integrity of the GRP pipe,” said Wes Long, sales manager at Perfor- mance Pipe. Canfor, the mill owner, specified a PE-RT 4710
grade of pipe – which is broadly equivalent to PE100 – because the standard grade would not have stood up to the high temperatures. The new material can also withstand oxidative attacks by residual chlorine levels. Overall, the PE-RT material cost less than the
GRP, and was installed 11 times faster says Long. At the same time, PE-RT pipes could be quickly joined together using heat fusion to create a leak-free, continuous pipe. The new pipe can be used continuously at 82°C, and intermittently at up to 95°C.
