Measured approach Beta LaserMike – part of NDC Technologies – has developed a number of measurement and control systems that it will showcase at NPE this year. For instance, its new LaserSpeed Pro non-con- tact length and speed gauge offers an accuracy exceeding +/-0.03%, with a wide measurement depth of field for the full velocity range. The company has incorporated a faster processing engine into it, allowing faster communications – while it also has Ethernet connectivity. Beta LaserMike says it is an Ideal replacement for contact encoders. At the same time, its BenchMike Pro now has a

larger, higher-resolution display and provides faster communications processing – offering Ethernet and USB connectivity.

All-round inspection Pixargus has developed a system that offers 360° surface inspection and shape measurement of large coated profiles and tubes. Its ProfilControl 7 DualVision XXL uses a new camera system and calibration technique to achieve this. The inspec- tion system now calibrates electronically – using no mechanical actuation – to make the process cheaper, it says. The coating of large cross-sections requires

reliable material input. Any damage or defect can increase cost. For this reason, product quality must be continuously inspected during production. However, conventional systems to inspect large profiles and tubes only check the main visible surfaces, says Pixargus – claiming that PC7 DualVi- sion XXL is the first system that can inspect all visible surfaces of large sections in a cost-efficient way. “We can detect flaws in large multi-angle sections of very complex structures and edges with high accuracy,” said Jürgen Philipps, technical managing director of Pixargus. The system is designed for a maximum diameter

of 260mm, but this can be customised for larger diameters.

The technology has been used to inspect

large sections of PVC window frames at a leading manufacturer. The task is challeng- ing because the coating is customisable and the variety of colours – in decorative, high gloss paint – is extensive. The system inspects more than 200 different sections of

different shapes, surfaces and colours and can detect tiny defects – without using expensive colour cameras – while coping with strong reflections.

Hand-held measurement Inoex has developed a hand-held system to quickly determine pipe dimensions. Its Warp Portable device is a Terahertz (THz) based system that can measure the wall thickness and diameter of plastic pipe in seconds. The THz source is a transceiver developed by Inoex, and a THz chip. The battery-operated device has been designed for medium- and large-diameter extruded plastic pipes. Those with a wall thickness of 5mm or more are measurable to an accuracy of 50 microns. The device includes two exchangeable centring aids – one for large diameters, the other for medium pipe sizes. The pipe producer places the device – and

matching centring aid – onto the pipe and presses a key. The LED ring round the pressed key is a status indicator, which provides feedback informa- tion on measurement quality. The operation is based on a capacitive touch display on the device, featuring a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The device is certified to IP 54, so will protect against water and dust in industrial environments.
