Tough customer: the benefits of PE100
Pipe projects that require premium performance – such as transporting water through a brownfield site – often rely on PE100 for its toughness and reliability. Lou Reade reports
PE100 has a reputation as a premium material, for applications that require the highest levels of performance. As material quality improves, however, so does cost. As in all things, it is often worth investing in extra quality in order to realise long-term benefits. Altmünster, a small town in Austria, has used PE100 pipes from local supplier Agru to replace a 48-year-old sewage pipe – which runs through the Traunsee lake. The new line comprises Agruline PE100-RC pipes – with protective layer – of OD 355mm in SDR 17. “The benefits of greater operational safety, longer service life and better protection of our drinking water from the Traunsee reservoir far exceed the slight additional cost of pipes with the

protective layer,” said Josef Leidinger, a water engineer and manager of the Altmünster sewer department. The original sewer line, installed in 1970, comprises two sewage pipes (of OD 300mm) laid side by side in the lake over a length of 2.3km. This would ensure operations were maintained in case of pipe rupture. Wastewater is pumped alternately through one of the pipes every day, ensuring an even abrasion on each. In the first few hundred meters of the PE pipeline, pump pressure builds up several times a day to propel the water column. The beginning of the line had been particularly stressed over the previous decade. The old pipe has now been replaced by a 3,215m long double sewage pressure pipe.
