improve impact strength or impart counterfeit detection capability. Earlier this year Venator (formerly the pigments division of Huntsman) launched a new addition to its Altiris range of infrared reflecting titanium dioxides. Altiris W400 pigment is suitable for use in cool white, near-white, bright color and pastel shade plastics. It offers a larger crystal size, narrow particle distribution, high crystalline purity and dense silica coating that current offerings; the company says a larger crystal size shifts reflectance across the solar spectrum and ensures a greater proportion of near infrared light is reflected. Iriotec 8826 is the latest addition to Merck’s 8000 series of laser marking pigments. Supplied in powder form, it is intended for applications in coloured polymers where it can be incorporated with minimal impact on the base colour. The new pigment is said to be activated so quickly by infrared laser light that is can be used to mark PE films, which the company claims is a completely new application area for laser marking additives.

PET conversion Brand owner moves to more transparency and colour in packaging is driving a switch from polyolefins to PET, according to Clariant. Such a change impacts colorants because PET and polyolefins have very different molecular and crystalline compositions, different migration behaviour, and varying heat stability. “Processing temperatures of PET are much higher than for polyolefins – for example, HDPE bottles are processed at around 230-250 °C while PET bottles are processed around 280-300 °C – therefore color- ants used for PET must withstand higher tempera- tures,” says Stefan Wannemacher, Head of Techni- cal Marketing Plastics in Clariant’s Pigments Business Unit. colour, wax-based concentrate, or a pellet concen- trate with a PET carrier. Carolina Color’s new UltraPET pellets are made with a polymeric carrier system that is highly compatible with PET and overcomes the challenges of these traditional systems, according to the company. In particular, it says UltraPET does not require recrystallisation (as PET-based pellets might), may not require drying if used at low rates for tints, and can achieve colour loadings similar to that of liquid colour or wax- based concentrates without the risk of migration or screw slippage problems. Carolina Color says it achieves its high pigment loadings through the use of its G2 technology, which was originally developed for outdoor applications to deliver UV protection additives together with colour pigments. The company also has a G3 carrier technology, designed for packag- ing and engineered materials, which is said to deliver a 25-35% higher pigment loading than the G2 system and is useful where it is necessary to combine high loadings of colorants, special effects, and functional additives. New from Holland Colours, Holcopearl 2287 masterbatch for PET packaging is designed to give deeper colour with optimal dispersion on high- speed, automated production lines. “Packaging plants today are increasingly automated and focused on high efficiency. Trends include moves to higher production speeds, deeper colours, more sensitive dosage settings, and the switch to spherical PET granules instead of cylindrical ones,” says Wilfried Grob, Sales & Marketing Manager Europe at Holland Colours. The Holcopearl 2287 product offers a high melting point and is supplied as round granules
