REACTIVE COMPOUNDING | PROCESSING

Below: This Leistritz ZSE27 MAXX extruder at AIMPLAS in Spain is

designed for reactive extrusion applications

Furthermore, reactive processing often involves the handling of hazardous products or formats - some- thing he says compounding processors often try to avoid. And, when significantly influencing the viscosity of material during reactive compounding, new phenomena will arise during extrusion that also need to be considered. These issues may not be addressed in existing literature and may need to be answered through alternative process set-ups and screw configurations. “Material optimisation, such as the compatibilis-

ing of biopolymer blends and the upcycling/ utilisation of secondary raw materials are questions that can be answered using reactive compound- ing,” Bergmann says. “Recently, we have developed reactive compounding-based recycling processes for PET and polyurethanes, the polymerisation of PLA using an extruder cascade set-up, and a single stage starch plasticisation/modification/blending process. Currently, we are about to realise a cascade set-up where the extruder is in the second process stage for an optimised polymerisation process. In addition, we are looking into processes such as biomass pre-treatment, reactive hot melt extrusion for pharma applications, and VOC and/or odour removal for primary and secondary raw materials by advanced compounding strategies.” Fraunhofer ICT adds that research trends in the

area of reactive compounding include processes to enhance recycling options and for the optimisation of biopolymers. In order to identify economic advantages for various applications and products, the researchers use commercial twin-screw extrud- ers as high-viscosity reactors. Maintaining molecular weight in recycling applications is a critical quality feature, one ensured by gentle process set-ups,
