New filters tackle highly contaminated waste
Interest in recycled plastic materials is growing fast. As a result, plastics recyclers are looking to handle greater volumes of material and want to process waste streams with potentially higher levels of contamination. Producers of recycling equipment, including melt filter manufacturers, are responding by developing hardware capable of processing a wider range of contaminated materials at ever higher throughputs. According to Plastics Recyclers Europe, the
European plastics recycling association, installed plastic recycling capacity in EU27+3 nations grew by 17% in 2021, boosted by an estimated €1.75bn in investments. Total capacity across the EU27+3 nations was put at 11.3m tonnes, with more than 730 recycling sites represented. The association ranks Germany, Spain, Italy, UK and France as the countries with the highest installed capacities, accounting for 66% of a total market valued at €8.7bn in turnover terms. Fimic says rising demand for recycled PET has led to increasing competition for available material. Recyclers serving producers of both food grade and non-food grade PET are turning toward more contaminated PET waste streams as feedstock material from which to produce high quality recycled plastics. The company says it has been working for many years now to improve its filtration technologies to meet the ever-increasing quality needs and different materials characteristics of recyclers, who now deal with more contaminated sources of PET waste. Fimic has recently installed two of its RAS-type filters on PET recycling lines processing highly contaminated PET waste streams. In both of these cases contamination of the input material reaches levels as high as 5%, which it says is a great deal higher than the typical ppm contamination previ- ously expected for food grade applications.
