Tenax TPWF is a woven carbon fibre fabric coated with a thermoplastic polymer and Tenax TPCL is comprised of impreg- nated and consolidated sheets made of several layers of Tenax TPWF. The qualified product, based on woven Tenax high strength carbon fibre and Vestakeep PEEK polymer from Evonik, is said to be well suited for large-scale production of aerospace structural components. Japan’s Otsuka Chemical’s Tismo ultra fine potassium titanate fibres are available in the company’s Poticon compounds for specialist applications such as LED reflectors and camera modules. With diameters from 0.2-0.6µm, the Tismo fibres offer high strength, a rigidity equiva- lent to carbon fibre, along with a Mohs hardness comparable to cast iron in. It is said to provide the Poticon compounds with very good friction and wear properties.
Flax developments The trend for using natural fibres like flax in the automotive industry has been growing in recent years. In collaboration with Bcomp, Sabelt is currently validating use of flax fibres to make a car seat with natural materials. Flax fibre can replace carbon fibre or fibreglass with renewable materials and significantly reduce CO2
emissions without
compromising performance. Exploring the poten- tial of Bcomp’s ampliTex fabrics, Sabelt created a prototype car seat using RTM processes which was exhibited at Bcomp’s booth during the JEC World 2023 expo in Paris this April. At the same event, Johns Manville’s Advanced Composites business showcased its PA6-based
Neomera organic sheets, which are available with woven (OS-6 series) and non-crimp fabrics (NCF-6 series). The company says they are recyclable, avail- able in large sheet dimensions designed to enable short cycle times, and can be thermoformed then injection-overmoulded to create products that exceed fire safety requirements without additives (FMVSS 302). “These novel liquid impregnated products offer
excellent mechanical properties,” said Dany De Kock, Market Development Manager. “Their high load bearing capacity is based on excellent bonding of the glass fibres to the resin matrix, enabled by a patented reactive glass fibre sizing. Since sheets up to 3mm thick can be produced in a single produc- tion step, the risk of delamination is avoided.”
