Webinar Animal Welfare and Gut Health

Animal welfare is a hot topic these days, particularly in the poultry industry. First speaker of the day was Dr Kate Barg- er-Weathers, director of World Animal Welfare at Cobb-Vantress Inc, who looked at how genetic selection and technology are improving broiler health, welfare and sustainability outcomes. She also discussed how innovative technology is being used to advance welfare outcomes and improve the precision of poultry care. Kate discussed the various technologies available that can improve bird wel- fare, including cameras, robotics and sound technology. Her take-home message to viewers was: “People are one of the most important factors for improving bird welfare. Produc- ers should provide comprehensive onboarding training and regular awareness training as part of any welfare pro- gramme.” Irene Hanning, senior manager of technical content, World Technical Services at Cobb-Vantress, spoke about the microbiome, its establishment and influence on gut health. Irene pointed out that even while poultry may have good gut health, this does not mean that they automatically have

good welfare. “The take-home message is prevention is the key to promoting a healthy biome, keeping a healthy flock and having good overall animal welfare.”

Webinar ‘No Antibiotics Ever II’

Intestinal health is the primary indicator of profitable poultry production. Management, nutrition and health all play a part in controlling and enhancing intestinal integrity. Hanna Hamina, chair of the Finnish Poultry Association, showed that for more than 10 years now it has not been nec- essary to medicate boilers. “We have had the One Health strategy since the 1940s and this requires a lot effort on a daily basis. It is not cheap, but it can also become expensive when animals get sick and need treatment.” Marcelo Lang, global marketing director at Chr. Hansen, who discussed the power of good bacteria and how it enables poultry production to reduce or eliminate the use of antibi- otics. Marcelo explained the challenges of ‘No Antibiotics Ever’ (NAE) – which included respiratory infections, early mortality due to neonatal bacterial infections and coccidio- sis. In his final recommendations Marcelo said: “NAE pro- grammes require a holistic approach and supplementation with Bacillus-based probiotics have multiple modes of action that may improve desired outcomes.” Elen Rondel, Europe-CIS poultry manager at Phileo, who said

that yeast solutions, together with a broad-based approach to farm management, can help birds become more resilient and remain in good health. Elen outlined the benefits of using Saf- mannan and how it can help to reduce the use of antibiotics.
