Webinar on Gut Health
Poultry producers know that good intestinal health is the first and foremost indicator of profitable poultry produc- tion. This starts already at incubation and is further en- hanced by the development of the bird’s microflora. First speaker, Maarten de Gussem, poultry veterinarian and man- aging director of Vetworks, highlighted the benefits of a more holistic view of gut health. He talked about why there are more gut health problems in broilers than in layers and how parasites and viruses interact with nutrition and the microbiome. In conclusion, Maarten noted that bacterial enteritis (BE) control is crucial to maintaining optimum fi- nancial performance. Next up was Angelo Lauwaerts MSc, consultant and advisor for FRAmelco, who discussed antibi- otic reduction with glycerides. Angelo admitted that there are a number of ways to help reduce the use of antibiotics but focused mainly on using feed additives as an alterna- tive. The last speaker of the morning was Alvaro Ortiz, gut health solutions technical expert Europe at Evonik, who looked at gut health and water-soluble solutions. Alvaro de- scribed how more professionals are now looking at gut
Webinar ‘No Antibiotics Ever’
The theme of the second webinar was: ‘no antibiotics ever.’ First speaker was Eline Holtslag, an incubation specialist at Royal Pas Reform Hatchery Technologies, who discussed post-hatch feeding in the context of antibiotic reduction. Eline explained that post-hatch feeding is the availability of feed, water and light to a newly-hatched chick. “The benefit of this feeding is that it can improve animal welfare, antibi- otic reduction and field performance,” she said. Next up was Stefan Alius, product manager for poultry at Nuscience, and he talked about the alternative approaches to securing gut health beyond nutrition. Stefan discussed the various tools and systems that can be used to support and evaluate gut health, such as digital solutions, online NIR, software, new methods and a holistic approach. “There is still no silver bullet available in terms of preventing gut health issues,” he concluded. Lastly, Julien Kanarek, global segment leader poultry at Du- pont, discussed boosting gut health through improved pro- tein digestibility and the impact of undigested crude pro- tein on microbial communities. Julien concluded that

protease can contribute to a healthy gut and have a direct impact on how efficiently an animal can digest its diet. “Dur- ing field trials it was found these [enzymes] can improve feed conversion rates,” he added.
