In mid-November, Misset International organised an entire week


of webinars. Pigs were in focus on November 16 and 19, when the topics were advanced pig production, weaning and gut health. All webinars can still be viewed on-demand at the Pig Progress website.


A week full of Webinar “Advanced Pig Farming” Aidan Connolly, president, AgriTech Cap- ital, highlighted how technol-


ogy – including both hardware and software – could make pig farming more efficient, connected by the Internet of Things. Robotic technology is certainly playing a key role in pig production to aid with labour on farm and in the pro- cessing plants. Examples included Pellon Group pig robot for efficient feeding and SkaldTek for housing improve- ments. The next speaker was Amanda Uitermarkt from Gestal/Jyga Technologies, who discussed precision feeding for pigs. She highlighted the amount of data farmers can collate and how her company uses this in technology for gestation, lactation and grow to finish stages. For gestation, she said it was important to feed to the needs of the individ- ual pig. Technology can be used, she said, to control this. Lastly, Jens Toppenberg, co-founder of Cloudfarms, looked at digital solutions to advancing pig production. He said: “We are trying to use modern technologies like sensors integration to leverage all the different data on the farm to

The first speaker in this webinar, Dr Casey Bradley, presi- dent at the Sunswine Group, talked about the use of “arche- typal proteins” to reduce crude protein in swine diets while optimising performance and reducing the pig industry’s en- vironmental footprint. She also touched on emissions and how to harness nitrogen, for example, and make it a usable commodity and not a challenge. Next in the spotlight was Delphine Van Zele, product manager pigs EMEA at Nuscience, who looked at five mis- conceptions about zinc-free weaning. The misconceptions highlighted by Van Zele were farmers thinking they can re- place zinc oxide with feed alone; weaning with lower pro- tein levels is impossible; extra fibre in the weaning diet will decrease growth; management doesn’t have a big impact on zinc-free weaning; and feeding creep feed in the farrow- ing house has no big influence on the weaning stage. Last to present on weaning was Graziano Mantovani from Cargill who focused on growability. He said growabili- ty equals the post-weaning survival percentage multiplied by weight gain and went on to discuss the factors that can
