40 ▶PIG PROGRESS | Volume 36, No. 10, 2020 Poland tests disinfectants against ASFv

In the absence of a vaccine against Afri- can Swine Fever virus (ASFv), Polish re- searchers recently tested eight active substances to confirm their effective- ness against ASFv. The team, attached to the National Veterinary Research In- stitute, Puławy, studied formaldehyde, sodium hypochlorite, caustic soda, glu- taraldehyde, phenol, benzalkonium chloride, potassium peroxymonosulfate and acetic acid. Results of their study were published in the peer-reviewed journal Pathogens.

This specific selection was chosen based on the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE)’s recommenda- tion and previous disinfectant studies on surfaces. The results of the study showed that most of the disinfectants inactivated the virus, in recommend- ed concentrations. Sodium hypochlo- rite, glutaraldehyde, caustic soda and potassium peroxymonosulfate showed the best ASFv inactivation rates, achieving titre reductions over 5 logs.

On-demand: Webinar on smart data use

A recently held Pig Progress webinar in cooperation with Nedap focused on the clever use of modern technology and data management applications. Of the three Nedap speakers, Martin Enderink (right on picture), global sales man ager, introduced the idea of “the last meter”. He introduced the company’s “sensored solutions”, where many sensors are placed in a barn to follow individual animals, measuring what they do, what they consume and how much they weigh. One place where much data can be col- lected is with gestating sows. This was the topic of the presentation by Hans Hoevink (left), business development manager Asia. By using RFID tags on each animal, a lot of sow behaviour can

be monitored. Hoevink zoomed in on automatic weighing data collection. He then summed up a range of reasons that it is beneficial to know sows’ body weight. Complementary to close monitoring during gestation is keeping oversight during lactation. As these circum- stances are different, solutions need to be different too. Jose Simeone (sec- ond from the right), sales and account manager Latin America, talked about solutions during lactation. He said that sows should be given rations according to their needs and they should be sup- plied with small amounts, daily and nightly. The webinar can be viewed on-demand at www.pigprogress.net.
