Key in this whole discussion is that we know the facts and find ways to measure the effect of what we do on sustainability parameters such as greenhouse gas emission, water use and long-term soil depletion for example. I have seen some interesting activities in the market lately when it comes to sustainability and animal feed. The first great piece of work is the first ever life cycle assessment (LCA) to see whether the use of insects for animal feed is more sustainable than using conventional protein sources such as soy and fish meal. The second great initiative is the Feed Compass project that is developing calculation tools and guidelines that help companies choose for future-fit (sustainable) animal feed that suits their business best. Both these examples are featured in this edition of All About Feed. In the end, making agri-food chains more sustainable starts with measuring, followed by setting goals and taking actions.
