Zinpro Zinpro welcomed Dr Mark Whitney as swine nutri- tionist – technical services. He will provide the compa- ny’s customers, research and sales teams with sup- port. Dr Whitney worked as an associate professor and swine extension educator at the University of Minnesota for nearly a decade.


Dostofarm Dostofarm, a German manufacturer of premixes and com- plementary feed, hired Dr Thilo Borchardt as business de- velopment manager. He will work on developing new products and technologies and will also be involved in cur- rent research and development projects. The company also appointed Jess Walls as new commercial director for North America.


Kemin Kemin Industries announced the selection of its leadership team for its newest business unit, Kemin AquaScienceTM, formerly known as AquaKulture. KP Philip, who has led Kemin AquaScience through its creation, will continue to serve as President. Leo Xie-Lei recently joined Kemin as Chief Commercial Officer for the business unit and Region- al Director of its China market, based in Shanghai. Three other regional directors will be located in aquaculture mar- kets across the globe to best serve customers: Chinna- durai Sugumar will be the Regional Director for the South Asia market. Nicola Tallarico will serve as Regional Direc- tor for the EMENA market and Ning Widjaja will be the Regional Director for the Asia Pacific market.


Veramaris Six seasoned professionals have recently joined Dutch- based firm Veramaris to accelerate the launch of its natural marine algal oil rich in the two essential omega-3 fatty ac- ids EPA & DHA for sustainable animal nutrition. They are: Ian Carr, Global Business Development Director, Lalen Dogan, Asia Pacific Business Development Director, Gaelle Husser, Global Business Development Director, Christian Martin, Global Business Development Director, Steven Severino, New Business Development Director and Jorge Torres, Latin America Business Development Director. The new team will strengthen the market position and roll-out of Veramaris’ natural marine algal oil, globally.


EU sorghum is ideal for animal feed. EU: Strong in tannin-free sorghum


One of the major limiting factors for us- ing sorghum in animal feed is presence of anti-nutritional factors such as con- densed tannins. The effects of tannins are particularly severe in monogastric animals like poultry, where anti-nutri- tional factors reduce growth rate of the birds by limiting the availability of cer- tain nutrients e.g. protein and carbohy- drate in the gut. In addition, there is a significant correlation between tan- nin-content and the energy value of

the finished product. Sorghum ID, the European organisation to support the promotion of the interests of sorghum and its hybrid genetics for several uses, emphasises that European sorghum va- rieties have been tannin free over the last 30 years, because in European countries a tannin content of less than 0.3 is required to register new varieties. In practice, this means “tannin-free” as its presence is so weak that it has no impact on the quality of animal feed.


Guidance document for insect sector


IPIFF, the International Platform of In- sects for Food & Feed has produced a guidance document on the best prac- tices in quality and hygienic insect pro- duction. The overall objective of the guide is to help insect producers for food and/or animal feed purposes to achieve a high level of consumer pro- tection and animal health through the production of safe products. Developed in the framework of the EU food and feed safety legislation, IPIFF has trans- mitted the document to the European Commission services, in view of its as- sessment by the EU members states representatives. “Pending discussion and endorsement by the European


Commission and national authorities, the document may constitute a useful tool for all insect producing companies or those who intend to engage in in- sect production to implement EU food and feed Regulations”, explains Antoine Hubert, the IPIFF President. He adds: “We trust this document could serve as valuable source of information to EU and national public authorities, espe- cially at a time when EU policy makers are reflecting on the possible authori- sation of insect proteins in poultry feed and several novel food applications covering insects as food are in the pipe- line”, adds Mr Hubert. The guide re- mains of voluntary nature.
