safety is using AI technology to score drivers (one through 10), based on their driving habits, how well they make a left-hand turn, or if they make hard stops, for example. It could also look at their pre- and post-trip inspections and if they’re catching all the me- chanical issues. She said this could be a fun competition for her staff while also providing trainers with areas that certain drivers may need extra atten- tion on.

“So, the AI technology is going to

say, ‘Hey, this driver needs to have more training here’ or ‘They’re doing excellent there,’” she said of the poten- tial future use cases of the technology for student transportation. “They would be great to bring up in the middle of your monthly or weekly meetings, ‘Bob, did an amazing thing this week.’ But it would also give you that oppor- tunity to retrain [someone] before you lose a driver.” And while Stamper doesn’t have this

technology yet, she’s been research- ing vendors and suppliers with similar offerings. “It’s not 100 percent,” she said of AI technology maturation. “But it’s getting there.”

Do you believe AI technology will enhance the safety, efficiency or costs for the student transportation industry?

AI For Routing Barbara Speece, the transporta-

tion specialist for Manheim Central School District in Pennsylvania, said AI technology is integrated into her dis- trict’s Transfinder school bus routing software. She noted that the system automatically assigns bus stops and students, creates driving directions, and predicts if a bus is over the student capacity limit or the student ride time is over the district’s acceptable time. “They have algorithms for optimiz- ing bus routes, for creating new stops and assigning learners,” she added. “I can open two, three, or four runs and click one bus and see if I can absorb some of the stops into another bus run, essentially eliminating a bus run
