Moving Into the Cloud Before moving into the cloud, careful analysis is in
order. “Take the time to talk to other organizations actively
using products you are considering,” said Carroll Coun- ty’s Stubenrauch. “Run a pilot before selecting a system for consideration on the full fleet.” Personnel needs should also be evaluated, she added. “Reviewing video is very time consuming,” said Aaron
Jones, manager of vehicle maintenance for California’s Clovis Unified School District. “It may require a part-time to full-time person to review depending on how many requests one receives from drivers, sites, accidents or other related concerns.” The most important step is to truly understand what a proposed system will and won’t do for you, Scott noted.
“If you’re told you can access all of your video at any time, get a specific understanding of what that means,” he said. “Understand how you will be able to search for a specific piece of video.” This means asking questions such as, how fast are up-
load speeds and how much of my video can I store and access? When accessing video [in] real time, what are the video quality limitations? How much will this truly cost? Prince George’s Baldwin added that obtaining video
equipment is only the first step. It’s also wise to create a sustainability plan for a unit replacement cycle. Identify- ing the right staff expertise is also a key. “Find a champion,” he advised. “That person can stay
up on the updates and troubleshooting tips in dealing with the day-to-day use.” ●
