tain additional hardware/DVR units to swap on the bus when wanting to view videos is also helpful.” The system also allows manual retrieval of video with a USB drive, providing a back-up solution when fast, remote retrieval is unavailable, or if there is a delay or failure in the remote retrieval process. Stubenrauch added that her system has yet to support

direct access for staff to pull video. That is accom- plished via a request to the vendor, who accesses the video remotely and posts it in the cloud for school staff to retrieve. This can cause a delay of 24 to 48 hours in retrieving the video, but the vendor hopes to add the capability for direct access in the future. “We do have the ability to live stream a bus, which is

very helpful in emergency situations,” she noted. “In challenging situations like bus crashes, extreme behav- ior issues, and severe weather concerns, this allows us to provide more effective support to drivers.” That feature has already been put into practice at Maryland’s Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland, reported Keba Baldwin, the district’s new di- rector of transportation and central garage.

“Our team was able to take advantage of the re-

al-time or near-real-time feature when several students attempted to harm another student on the bus,” he recalled. “This feature allowed our department to turn the video over to the police department in an attempt to quickly apprehend the suspects.” He said he has also found advantages such as a

quicker response and retrieval time of requested videos, reduced labor time for retrieving video footage and a clear chain of custody traceability. Going forward, widespread use of such advanced systems seems likely. Robert Scott, senior vice president of strategy for 247Security, said he anticipates that the future will be cloud based but not without challenges. “Moving GPS data is commonplace now, but moving

large video files has its challenges,” he added. “A quality and cost-effective solution will require innovation.” One current example is offered by a DVR that has a cell

modem built in, making it possible to track the bus live. “Integrating video with tracking students and buses is happening now and will become more standard as time moves on,” Scott noted.
