It’s commonplace to walk Prince George’s County Public Schools transportation department facility and meet people who have worked there for over two decades. They shared their years of service with dignity, pride and an understanding of what it means for the safety of school children. Many started at the school district as a school bus driver or monitor, some work- ing their way up to supervisor and other administrator roles. One school bus driver has been driving for 31 years, another for 33 years. Dave Burgess, the assistant supervisor of central garage, is in his 48th year at the district. Repeatedly, it was an overwhelming response of “the people” when asked why they stay year after year. Despite so many at PGCPS logging decades service, Director of Transportation Keba Baldwin is going on his third year as the di- rector of transportation and has gained sup- port from his staff and improved the overall culture at the department. He has set high standards and goals for his team but follows through with support and resources. When on site visiting his transportation depart- ment, he was observed walking into each office and no one was surprised to see him, no one straightened up or instantly stopped what they were doing. Instead, people smiled, almost expecting that at some point throughout the day they would see him. His visibility and approachability is obvious. Despite the number of students transported being well over 100,000 at PGCPS, Baldwin understands the overall goal of student transportation and is still able to make time to visit an individual bus stop (out of 5,000 school bus stops) at 6 a.m. in the morning to see for himself if it is safe.
